Software compatibility

I hope you can help me.

I have an adult daughter with cerebral palsy. She uses her left hand to manipulate a mouse and loves to play many games on her Windows XP computer. She would have no problem with a touch screen, but before buying her a Windows 8 computer with a touch screen I need to know if Windows 8 will play games written for Windows XP. Games like Reader Rabbit and the like that she is very attached to. The games are on CD/DVD media.

How good is Windows 8 at running Windows XP programs?

Thank you

If they are 16bit they would not run on 64bit windows. Otherwise nobody can guarantee any games to work on Win8, can try but it may not be possible. There are compatibility settings and compatibility troubleshooter in Win 8 and sometimes it helps but not always.
Those are payed programs so I was unable to download and try. You may try contacting them on : Hop, Skip & Jump and check with them, they list no system requirements on their site.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I appreciate it.

Writing to the producing companies is a good idea.

I personally use Windows 7 but have no experience with W8.

Hi there

I'm not sure of the extent of the disability but IMO for running a lot (in fact these days nearly ALL) XP games on W8 you could use a Virtual Machine. Running Virtual machines these days have changed significantly with hardware acceleration and proper 3-D support now working in VM's. -At one time even playing DVD's was a problem on a VM - but not now.

I'd suggest therefore you start with a Windows 8.1 installation set to boot to desktop automatically, start the VM and then play the games.

For vmsoftware download vmware vmplayer (FREE). To install the VM simply install XP like on a normal machine.

There are tools also to "Virtualize" your current running XP machine too.

Cheers
