Hi there.

This is an absolute CLASSIC example of a TOTALLY BOVINE use of Metro - replacing the old accessories==>calculator by the Metro Calculator.

The wretched thing works Totally in Full screen -- what use is that to Man or Beast - especially if you have a Form or some text (not spread sheets) on your screen and you need to refer to them for your calculations.. What you need is a POPUP calculator that they had from the first versions of Windows 3 until Windows 7.

The calculator could also be useful as a popup on TOUCH screens too if you need it - but the stupid full screen thing -- totally useless.

I as actually quite surprised when I searched calculator and it operated like that. - Normally I use a nice calculator app on my mobile phone - but the battery is empty so I need the computer !!!.

Also on those stupid metro apps how to you take a screenshot of a small area on the screen.

Whoever thought of that type of interface for desktop working -- Where's my rifle. !!!

Cheers

I like docking the calculator to 1/3 of the screen. Sure it is still big, but useful.

Otherwise it is a Microsoft example app. Done to show what Metro can do. Simple little app for demonstrations.

Just install SpeedCrunch and be done with it.:)

Excel is easier to use than a calculator really. If you want calc.exe does still exist of course - far less intrusive.

Snipping Tool in Modern/Metro:
Open Snipping Tool > Make sure it’s not in Capture mode by pressing ESC key > Go to metro screen, pop up menu, or whatever you want to capture > Hold down CTRL key and press PrintScreen > The screen becomes greyed out (capture mode) > Click, hold, and drag to capture. Press ESC key if you want to cancel or start over again.

So the key is: CTRL+PrintScreen to enter capture mode (Screen greyed out) and ESC to get out of capture mode.

Hi thetre

That's too much work if you have to to it several times

EXCEL is also a bit of overkill when just using a calculator -- also one might NOT have office installed on that particular machine

However someone mentioned CALC.EXE still exists so I'll pin that to the taskbar.

Cheers

Don't know about overkill - it takes less than a second to launch Excel. Usually I have to take whatever number and then immediately divide it by 360 (or 365) and then multiply by 30. Excel is good for that sort of thing. I also have a physical calculator next to my PC as the buttons are bigger and more convenient for me.

Hi thetre

Are you referring to the Snipping Tool? If so, is there a better way to capture a portion of a screen? I know of no other way other than WinKey/PrintScreen for a screenshot and then modify in a program, but that’s more work.

EXCEL is also a bit of overkill when just using a calculator -- also one might NOT have office installed on that particular machine

Agree, but while using Excel, AutoSum and Formulas are great. The open Excel sheet was used in my screenshot just as an example of an open window.

However someone mentioned CALC.EXE still exists so I'll pin that to the taskbar.

Both versions of Calculator are some of the first tiles I place on my Start Screen in the first most-used column. I’ll use either one depending on what I’m performing.

Calculators Snip.PNG

I see very little difference so far as size for screen real estate.

However, I must admit that the Win32 version is better for it has far more options/modes that they added through the years. Remember it way back when? I’m trying to remember when they released it. Let’s see > WinKey > 2 arrows right > 1 down > opens my Wekipedia Store app > 2 tab keys to search box > type “Calc.exe” > Enter > walla! > info.

They have come a long way with it.

Hi there
I'm "Semi-Retired" now - but still do the odd contract for usually largish organisations in Holland, UK, France, Belgium and Germany from time to time -- all adds up to some "extra pennies" these days.

Probably going to retire to somewhere like S.E France (not too far from Biarritz - HENDAYE right ON the Spanish border -- already seen a place I want to get). Hendaye is sufficiently far from the Beach to avoid the hordes of Tourists although beach easily walkable / bikeable if you are reasonably fit and has great links to Biarritz and San Sebastian (Spain). Biarritz is a decent airport too (if that's not a contradiction in terms --Airports and Decent !!) so travelling further afield is still easy. If one likes ships there's also a decent Ferry connection from BILBAO (about 1.5 hrs away on Motorway) and Portsmouth in UK too.

Cheers
jimbo
