ok long story short I had problems with 8.1 and my favorite game The Secret World.

I rolled back to Win 8 64bit

I have 2 games that need net frame 1.1 to run
Sid Meiers Pirates
Dungeons & Dragons Online

both of which are kinda old favorites of mine.

I absolutely do not want to gum anything up that might affect the running of The Secret World, but I'd really love to run the other two games as well. Is it best i just forget about them *sniffle* or is it safe to manually install 1.1?

Running .NET Framework 1.1 Apps on Windows 8 or 8.1

.NET Framework 4.5

The .NET Framework 1.1 is not supported on the Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012, or the Windows Server 2012 R2 operating systems. In some cases, the .NET Framework 1.1 is specifically identified as required for an application to run. In those cases, you should contact your independent software vendor (ISV) to have the application upgraded to run on the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 or later version. For additional information, see Migrating from the .NET Framework 1.1.

Installing the .NET Framework 1.1 from a CD or Download Center

It is not possible to manually install the .NET Framework 1.1 on Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012, or Windows Server 2012 R2. It is no longer supported. If you try to install the package, the following error message is displayed: "Setup cannot continue because this version of the .NET Framework is incompatible with a previously installed one." To solve this problem, install the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. This version includes the .NET Framework 2.0 (the release that follows the .NET Framework 1.1), which is supported on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. You should always try to install the application first to determine if it will automatically be updated to a later version of the .NET Framework. If it does not, contact your ISV for an application update.

Another option for playing your older games is virtualisation.
Install VMWare or Virtualbox on your windows 8 system and install Winxp or even Win 98 so you can play your games.

Search on this forum or the net how to do this.

Windows 8 does include portions of .Net Framework 3, but the feature is disabled by default. Below is the command to enable it..

Code:
Dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFx3 /All

Some users have said it will not work on some machines in which case you'll need to find a modified version to install for Windows 8. Although, I can not provide you a link. But I can tell you they exist.

All in all, it might be a good choice to find a newer game which is compatible with Windows 8.
