Videos cannot be played since Windows 8.1 was installed

I have used the MPUI video viewer for several years on Windows 7 and Windows 8.0 without any problem.
Last week I installed Windows 8.1 on my Lenovo laptop, and since that time, MPUI does not work. So I figured that maybe MPUI is no longer compatible with Windows 8.1, so I'll download a different media player from the Store.
I downloaded and tried PressPlayer, Media_Player and Quick Media Player, none of which will play the videos that I downloaded from YouTube.
The media players just say that this video cannot be played. MPUI displays the initial picture from the video, but doesn't proceed like it did previously.
Does anyone know why my videos stopped working after I installed Windows 8.1.?

Well I have not used Mplayer or downloaded YouTube videos, although from your screen shot it is showing screenshot of the Metro Media Player.
Youtube files are normally downloaded as FLV files, this not supported from the Metro Media player as far as i am aware.

    Support files are as follows:

I have not used Mplayer so I cannot comment on previous functionally. Make sure you are on the latest version and have the desired codec packs is all i can suggest.

Although I have used VLC player for many many years and have never had a problem, it might be worth you trying it download below.

VideoLAN - VLC: Official site - Free multimedia solutions for all OS!

    Hope that helps.

Yes, the screenshot was from the Metro Media Player when I tried to play this video:
Anthem of the German Demokratic Republic (GDR).mp4
Mp4s are on the list of videos that it can play, and I tried various different MP4 files, but none of them worked.
I also tried different video players from the store that I mentioned without any different result.
I think that the problem resides not in the video players or the video files, but is a Windows 8.1 system problem, since MPUI worked fine on this laptop before I installed Windows 8.1.
I downloaded VLC and tried to run several MP4 files, but the display doesn't advance beyond the initial picture, and no sound is heard.

    Thanks for your suggestion, anyway.

Right so I have just tested this in a Virtual Machine with Windows 8.1 - clean install

I went to this website and downloaded it:
MPUI, the MPlayer frontend for Windows

Extracted all the files ran the MPlayer application then ran the MPUI exe and dragged an mp4 file in to the video player and it works.

I tested it using a sample file MP4 file:

    QuickTime: Sample files

I know this does answer the question why yours does not work, but it does show it is compatible playing .MP4 files on Windows 8.1

The sample MPEG files do not run on the Metro Media player, but they run without audio on the VLC and MPUI players.
Is there a diagnostic to run to track down what is wrong with my Windows 8.1 installation?
The Store icon now works but I just found out yesterday that videos will not run on my laptop.
    Thanks for your suggestions.

    From an elevated command prompt

from the metro screen - type "CMD" > right click "Run as Administrator"

    In the CMD console type:

    sfc /scannow

Also to check your drivers from an elevated cmd prompt you can use:

    verifier.exe /all

Also please check device manager your sound driver has not got any issues(also check for update)

Please check nothing is on mute for example bring up windows mixer and make sure everything is in order.

Also for VLC you can check under preferences > audio that is enabled (could also try resetting all settings)
VLC should not additional codecs everything comes pre packed in the install.

For the other application you made need the codecs I am not sure the internals of the applications if this is the case.

K-Lite Codec packs comes well recommended.

I should add that if I go to YouTube website and play a video, the sound and video are normal. The stored videos are what the video players cannot play.

Ok, good news that you tube and so on is working.

If you play another file for example a movie on one of the players does it work how you would expect?

Also what software are you using to download the videos from youtube? And is there an update?

Harry, I can't get any of the stored videos to play on any of the Media Players that I have.
These videos I downloaded using DownloadHelper months ago, and they always played fine until this week, after I installed W8.1.
I thought at first that MPUI was incompatible with W8.1, but none of the media players that I have since downloaded work either, so I believe it is a system problem.
    Thanks again for your interest.
I see you are in the UK, so you probably ready to sleep.
