Hi gang. I am the only user on this machine and have my UAC set to never notify me (not sure if that is helpful info or not, but there you go) I have always been able to double click installation packages and the programs install fine. Yesterday I went to install a small puzzle game and I got an error setup error 5.png
I have tried to install other programs and get the same error. I am able to right click the install package, run as admin and they install no problem. I have not changed any admin setting or installed any programs that should interfere with anything. What would have caused this to start happening now? how do I fix it?
Thank you for your time....

It sounds like maybe the account you're on doesn't have admin-level privileges.

Check the account in control panel or create a temp. admin account to try.

Can also try to temporarily disabling your antivirus before running setup (as admin).

It seems to be a permission problem.

Move the files to another folder and see if you can install, or try this:

The problem is with the security permissions on your profile temp folder. To fix it navigate to %temp% or C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local and right click on the Temp folder and choose properties, then click the security tab and click advanced.

On the permissions tab you should see the permissions that are there. There should 3 which are:

'SYSTEM' with Full control which applies to 'This folder, subfolders and files'

'Administrators' with Full control which applies to 'This folder, subfolders and files'

'Your Username' with Full control which applies to 'This folder, subfolders and files'

and all 3 should be inherited from the C:\Users\[Username]\ folder.

If you don't have the 'Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent' option ticked, then tick it and click continue if there are any problems, then remove the permissions that aren't inherited.

Once you click 'Apply' and click 'OK' you should have the permissions to write to the directory and you won't get those error messages any more.

morning. thank you for replying, I do appreciate the effort and help. this is what I have so far when trying to follow your directions.
temp folder setttings.png

so I ticked replace all child object permission and got this:
secuirty error.png

I'm at a loss. I'm fairly computer literate, but I have never had to mess on with permission settings because I am the only one that uses this laptop. There are no other accounts set up.
Any other thoughts?

Your Welcome,

Seems you have two admin accounts shown in Advanced Settings window.

Should only be the last 3 shown in that window which do show they have full control over the temp directory and User folders.

You could try removing one at a time from the top two ones.

Did you install anything that gave you another users account, check user account controls in control panel.

As said before you can make a temporary Admin Account to try also, then remove it.

Do you have a system restore point? Windows 8 has refresh and restore also as a last resort.

morning. thanks again for your help...i went to delete those other 2 accounts (after setting a restore point) and they do not show any more. I have since install 6 random programs...a few small games, a media player, photo editor, and open office, and have not had any problem installing them. i did not have to right click and run as admin. very odd?!?!? I guess i'll make the thread as solved even though I personally didnt solve anything lol thank you jds, take care, and i'm sure you will hear from be again...

Your welcome, you should not have to right click and run as admin. The Users Account Control should pop up when you try to install a program you have to click o.k. to proceed with install. Mattering how you set the UAC settings in control panel, check in action center under security, should be set to default, (notify me only when apps try to make changes to my computer).

Those two extra user profiles i saw looked wrong to me, i did not have those on mine, one said special.
You solved something, the error is gone.

You are the Admin, the only Admin., sometimes you may have to right click and run as admin on occasion, say when using command prompt, making changes in certain files, etc..

Always make restore points, usually as said Windows does when installing or uninstalling programs or updates, but good to periodically make manual ones, i do. Registry backups and image backups are good too. Need help still, feel free to ask, YW
