Hi David and welcome to Eight Forums.

Since Windows 8 the support for DVD playback has been stripped. So with just Windows 8 (or 8.1) you can't playback DVD's.

In order to playback DVD's you will need to install a third party software. There are many different softwarepackages available. On of the free versions is VLC Media Player (VideoLAN - Official page for VLC media player, the Open Source video framework!). VLC has DVD playback support.

Good luck with it.

Greetz,

Make sure you downloaded VLC from ONLY the link provided at

VideoLAN - VLC: Official site - Free multimedia solutions for all OS!

There are a few fake links that have added virii and malware.

The default package from VideoLan.Org has no other added software and it is fully functional, the fake installers I've seem clip out some of the major abilities of VLC like the DVD player.

But even in the authorized version, if you go into Advanced Settings, you can enable or disable the DVD playing portion, or change it. I highly suggest NOT ever changing anything unless you know exactly what it is.

VLC deals with Windows 8/8.1's inability to play any DVD's at all. Also, if you have VLC installed, o NOT install any extra "Codec Packs" which are usually stuffed with all kinds of unwanted software. VLC can play every codec there is by default, and the program ignores any installed codecs, preferring to use it's own, non modifiable codecs.
