Hi,

Maybe it's just me that this annoys but i hope there is a setting that can be changed to fix it...
In Windows 8/8.1 if you try to open an app that is already open it does nothing.

Example:
1. Click start >> Type MSTSC >> Press Enter and connect to a remote computer/server.
2. Do the same again (not on the remote computer/server) >> you will notice after hitting Enter that it doesn't open the Remote Desktop dialogue.

It will either go back to the desktop or open the original remote connection.
It is the same with any application (Excel, Word...)

It didn't work that way in 7, it would open a new instance of that application is there any way to change this?

Regards,
Jamie

Hello Jamie,

Usually you could press and hold the Shift key, click on the shortcut or .exe file to open a new instance of it, and release Shift. Some programs may not allow multiple instances, but it does work for Remote Desktop Connection though.

Hope this helps. :)

Hi JDobsy:

I'm a victim of what you're talking about on certain apps.

I can open all the Microsoft Word 2010 documents I want and every one will open in a new window; they're stacked up neatly for me to figure out which one I want to use next.

I CANNOT open Microsoft Excel 2010 more than once unless I jump through a particular hoop I've forgotten for the moment. I have it written down somewhere, though . . .

But guess what! When I was beta testing Microsoft Office 2013, there were enough complaints about Excel not opening more than once that MS listened and I can have more than one Excel file open at a time. And I need that!

So, why don't I move on to Office 2013? Because I just cannot live with the extra work and confusion it causes me.

Ain't computers such wummerful things? :)

It's all good fun, it keeps our brain ticking over :)

The Shift key works nicely for me!
