Hi there

You need to be REALLY careful these days when downloading DECENT FREE software -- often the actual download link is really confusing and hard to find and even when choosing an EXCELLENT and well known FREE music tagging program (mp3tag) you can get MIS-DIRECTED to something called NCH STAMP ID3 tag editor which isn't as good and has reference to a PAID version (if not a home user). Mp3tag is an excellent product BTW so no problem in downloading it - but download the right piece of software.

I can understand why some people end up with all sorts of unwanted toolbars and apps on their machines these days -- just a note to everyone to do the following before clicking the download button

1) Ensure the download is the SOFTWARE YOU WANT.

2) look for and uncheck any "extra offers" or toolbars that you don't want.

3) if there are any "Free but you pay a subscription after 30 days unless cancelled" - either set a reminder in your calendar to CANCEL in good time or if you want the subscription (not usually worth it in most cases unless you are doing a legitimate trial e.g Photoshop) update your Bank records so you don't have a whole slew of subscriptions being taken out of your account.

The whole sneakerware / invasionware type of approach is in some ways more insidious than actual visible crime since a lot of people just won't bother to check for at least a few months -- so a nice little earner if you can get it.

So again -- always doubly or preferably TRIPLE check before pressing the download button.

I hear you Jimbo, totally agree. I've noticed more often than not, the first 4 or 5 listings in a Google search for something are bogus sites. What you are looking for is in the domain name but its just a fake product/scam to get you to that site. To avoid that I usually recommend going to Majorgeeks or similar sites so they actually get what they were looking for and not something I'm going to spend days trying to remove from their system. My step daughter used to be bad for the endless toolbars. She would just click, click, click, until the program was installed, then wonder why her home page changed etc. The latest trend seems to be making you guess which download button actually downloads what you went there for.

Totally agree, that really makes me mad as well and it's getting worse and worse.

They purposely deceive you by placing the actual links in some random unobvious location so that you accidently click on one of the other freaking toolbar links. I mean it's a purposeful guessing game sometimes as to which one is the actual product you want.

I'm getting good at finding the correct link in the jumble of fakes and I look at the down load tab at the bottom of the page to make sure I'm getting the right one as Jimbo wisely mentioned. Not everyone is as savvy as the ones working here and will get stuck with this bloatware.

This is another reason I don't like messing with third party "free ware" because it's never free. There are very few good free programs left anymore that don't have some major strings attached in the form of unwanted ads popping up on your screen etc.

Ive had it out with ImgBurn, Unlocker, etc - I point out that the bundled software is BABYLON, an incredibly hard virus to remove. Finally I just posted warnings on the pages for download, and the Mods have left them up. Problem is, in thew forums for those sites, they get all UPPITY about "this is freeware" - I always tell em, I can see that bundling helps the Dev, but NOT when the bundled app is a VIRUS.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Yeah, all that plus some Downloaders which they push on you, I can download what I want without them, thank you. Absolutely despicable practices, if you ask me. Seen some browsers so clogged up with toolbars that there's barely a line or two left for viewing a page. "Ask bar" seems to be replacing Babylon as worst offender and I have found some instances where it installs even after clearly expressed wish not to install it. The biggest problem is that people simply do not read anything before installing software and some places exploit that in most despicable way to push even more of freeware which makes no sense at all.
I do like freeware as there's a lot of good ones made by budding developers and also people fed up with lack of simple, good software to do certain stuff.
I like "Major Geeks" site for finding software, they try to keep it clean and in worst case they warn you if there's some addon or anomaly with programs.
