Windows store not working, error 0x80240017.

    Hi all,

So recently the Windows Store has stopped working for me (Win 8.1 Pro). By not working, I mean that whenever I try to install an app, I get the following error message:

    Your purchase couldn't be completed
Something happened and your purchase can't be completed. Error code: 0x80240017.

Furthermore, apps are not updating automatically, and a manual check reveals no updates available. That being said, I know for a fact that my Facebook and OneNote apps are out of date, since they have both changed on my other computer. As a test, I uninstalled the OneNote app, and now I can't re-install it.

    So far I've tried:
    The apps troubleshooter.
    The windows update troubleshooter.
    WSReset.exe
    SFC.exe (no violations found)

Thoughts? Because I've run out of them.
    Thanks in advance.

Hello Arrbez, and welcome Eight Forums.

You might see if going through the troubleshooting steps in the tutorial below may be able to help.

Apps and Tiles Not Working or Responding: Fix in Windows 8

    Hope this helps,

Win apps is becoming a really pain in the proverbials. I tried to install Skype. It said I have to have a microsoft account. No I bloody don't. If I want to install anything on my pc, I do not need Microsofts bloody permission to do it. I tried putting in my 'old' @live.co.uk account and it said "you already have that account, get off yer ass and create another" - erm, no I wont. So I removed all ms email accounts, so now I don't have any! All because the apps say I must.

So I finally have some time to go through that tutorial, here are my results:

    1. Run "Windows Store Apps" Troubleshooter

    • First, it says that my display drivers might be out of date, and offers to open the device troubleshooter. The device troubleshooter says that "Hardware devices may not have been detected". Regardless of what that means, I'm running the latest display drivers from nvidia.
    • The results from the troubleshooter appear as follows:
      Issues found
Check for missing or corrupt files
Check for missing or corrupt files
      Detected
Repair missing or corrupt files Completed
Display adapter drivers might be out-of-date
Display adapter drivers might be out-of-date
      Detected
Check for updated display adapter drivers Completed
    • Restarting to the system afterwards doesn't fix the problem, and the troubleshooted doesn't specify which files were "missing or corrupt".

    2. Activate Windows 8

    • Windows is activated.

    3. If using a Proxy
    • Nope.

4.Restart the PC or Restart Explorer

    • Obviously, the first thing I tried.

    5. Cannot be Signed in to the Built-in Elevated "Administrator" Account
    • Signed into a microsoft account.

    6. Use a Microsoft Account

    • see above.

    7. Set Screen Resolution to Minimum of 1024 (width) x 768 (height)

    • 1680x1050

    8. Connect to the Internet

    • Check.

    9. Enable User Account Control (UAC)
    • set to default

    10. "Your purchase couldn't be completed" Error in Store
    • Windows update service was set to manual, but stopped. I started the service, but that didn't solve the problem.

    11. Enable and Start "Windows Firewall" Service
    • Running, and set to automatic.

    12. Set Apps to be Trusted in 3rd Party Antivirus Program
    • no 3rd party a/v

    13. Set Correct Time and Date
    • check

    14. Update your Apps
    • Sadly, this is the problem.

    15.Re-register the Store
    • Didn't fix the problem.

    16. Clear Store Cache
    • Didn't fix the problem.

    17. Sync App Licenses
    • Didn't fix the problem.

    18. Error Code: 0x80073cf9 while Installing App in Windows 8
    • Not my error code, but regardless, the AUInstallAgent folder is present.

    19. Turn Off "Morphological Filtering" in Catalyst Control Center (CCC)
    • No ATI graphics card

    20. Uninstall and Reinstall the App

    • is there a way to re install the app store?

    21. Run a SFC /SCANNOW Command

    • No violations found.

    22. Contact the App Publisher
    • somehow I doubt this would help

    23. Refresh Windows 8 or 8.1
    • I was hoping for a measure short of this.

Any thoughts? How do I track down the error code I'm getting, there must be a list of these things somewhere.

I'm also having this error, with 2 apps only though.
Project Spark and Bing Maps Preview. I'm on 8.1, which they both require so I don't know what's up...?

    Same boat with me.

Been searching for hours online for potential solutions and have tried everything under the sun. Nothing is working. I don't know what else to do except a factory restore at this point (which I've already had to do once for a separate issue and I just got the laptop I'm using three weeks ago) and really hope it doesn't come to that but I'm at my wits end.

Same error here, but only when trying to download the outstanding Project Spark. Tested Bing Maps -- and it installed OK.

Anyone have a suggestion on what might work.

There was a KB Windows Update to address this (KB288,7592) and I verified it was installed, and still no go.

You can read about the rollup update here: "0x80240017" error when you try to install a Windows Store app in Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 R2

    Hi,

I had the same problem. I tried every "Fix" and nothing worked. Finally in one of these forums someone recommended this tool at Tweaking.com. The tool is named "Windows Repair (All in One) v2.1.1". This tool has a number of fixes. I just chose the "Repair Windows App Store". There is a tutorial online for this tool, but I believe you will find it easy to use. The tool also has an option to backup your registry and set a restore point before repairing. I recommend that. I hope this works for you.
