Hi everybody,

I need your help for a change ;). Since the upgrade to Windows 8.1 I have a very strange issue with the Windows Powershell (and only withg the Powershell). I occurs both on my Surface Pro 2 as well as on my desktop computer.

General information:
On my Surface Pro 2 the screensize option is set to 150% (standard on the Surface Pro 2).
On my desktop computer I've set the screensize option to 125% (my eyes are very bad ).

The case:
When I open Windows Powershell (normal and admin) it opens and looks normal for about a second or two. Then the screen shrinks to a very small and unreadable size. See the screendump ==>
2013 11 07, Powershell.PNG

The tryouts:
First I ran the SFC/ Scannow and DISM commands. They came out clean. On my desktop I also did a complete full new installation (was needed anyway ). This didn't help though.

What did "help" was setting the screensize option to 100%. That way the Powershell window doesn't shrink.

Conclusion:
It looks like the Powershell cannot cope with the screensize option being anything else then 100%. The funny thing is though that under Windows 8.0 this problem does not occur.

My question:
Is anyone of you having this same problem? Do you perhaps have a sollution? Or is this a bug in Windows 8.1 that Microsoft needs to fix?

Any help and suggestions are welcome.

Many thanks in advance,

Rover

Hi Rover,

I just did some cross testing and here are my results:

Using magnifier tool:

Enlarging the display:

I think my testing appears to confirm your suspicions but keep in mind that power shell may be outside of the control of those windows parameters (just a guess at that). If so, I would also suspect that the command line prompt works the same way.

Good luck and thanks for all you do around the forum to help others.

Hmm.... After reviewing my results again. It does appear that changing the displaty sizes does make the text look bigger in power shell:

But not nearly as large as the magnifier.

Hi my2cents,

Thanks for you post. I don't use the magnifier (I'm way too young for that ;)). I've just resetted the screensize option (or whatever it is called in the English version).

I guess that perhaps I wasn't to clear in my initial post. So, I took three screenshots to show the problem.

First one of the place in the Configpanel where I change the settings.
2013 11 08, powershell settings.PNG

Then one of my screen with settings at 100%.
2013 11 08, powershell 100.jpg

One with the settings at 125%.
2013 11 08, powershell 125.jpg

One with the settings at 150%.
2013 11 08, powershell 150.jpg

As you can see everything gets adjusted to the new size, except the Powershell. The command prompt (CMD) does get adjusted to the new size. So it's just the Powershell that's acting strangly.

Under Windows 8.0 the Powershell application did adjust to the new size. That's the strange part. It did work before.

Hope this new info will help you all help me :).

Greetz,

Rover

Hmmmm, that's very wierd indeed my2cents. It seems that it works just ok at your computer. That should indicate that it is something local. But why does both my Surface Pro 2 as well as my dekstop computer show the same issue?

I did a few more checks. I can change the settings of the powershell screen. The next picture shows the standard setting of the Powershell window as well as the CMD window. Notice the difference of the windowsize by both.

2013 11 08, knipsel powershell 002.PNG

After I change them at the properties window of the Powershell and press OK I get the message that the "shortcut cannot be adjusted. Check if the shortcut isn't deleted or that the name isn't changed".

2013 11 08, knipsel powershell.jpg

After pressing the OK the Powershell window does change to normal. But when I close and restart the Powershell application it's back to zero again.

I find it very wierd that this same issue happens on both my machines. IMHO that rules out a local bug.

Do you have any other idea that I can try out?

Thanks again,

Rover.

Ok, this is strange guys!!! ==> but I solved the issue :what::dinesh:

I told in the previous post that I can change the looks of the Powershell but I get an error when OK'ing it. Your posts however made me think. So, I tried running the Powershell as an Admin and then changed the settings.
Running as an Admin I can save the settings!!!

It worked on both my Surface Pro 2 as well as on my dekstop computer. The 'only' thing I had to do was to start the Powershell as admin before making the changes.

Thank you all for the help in this post. It is really appreciated!

Very good. You might want to change the property of the power shell shortcut to run as Admin then it will always run as Admin. Just right click on it->open the file location then change the property.
