Windows Movie Maker 2.6 freezes and stops responding when I make an audio track shorter. What can I do? And I want to use Windows Movie Maker 2.6 for some simple stuff sometimes, because other video making softwares are too difficult for some simple stuff many times...

The absolute best version (IMHO) was WMM 6.0 and you can still use it on Win 8.1 with this special installer:

Blaine's Movie Maker Blog: Installing Windows Movie Maker 6.0 on Windows 7 or 8

Hre's a screenshot and it works perfectly!

Hope I have helped you by providing an alternative solution for you.

Good luck,

Hi! I downloaded WMM 6.0 but it won't let me install it. When I open it, it only gives the message where it says "Gathering required information..." and then nothing else happens and it is not fully installed then... What can I do? I downloaded the x64 one because I have a x64 PC.

Is this what you downloaded?

Did you right click and select "install" because this is an MSI installer?

Hello IloveSnape,

Thanks for all of your clarifications. I can confirm it also works on Windows 8.1 too because I have used it on both. It seems you have other issues that are affecting your ability to use several video editing solutions. So I think we have to look for some common denominator between them all.

So, are you having any other issues that are not tied to video or audio editing? Did they ever work or did they just stop working after upgrading to 8.1? If they just stopped working recently, can you tie any triggering events to that coincident timeframe (new program installs, driver updates, Windows Updates downloaded)?

Hi! Vegas Pro 12 and Windows Movie Maker stopped working after upgrading to Windows 8.1, and I didn't install anything else after I upgraded to 8.1.

Not sure why that is happening but the reason may be that those movies were created using WMM 2.6 which may have a codec that did not exist when 6.0 was first introduced or it may have discovered an incompatible filter during the installation process:

In addition, any video that has been "massaged" by a third-party video converter, prior to being opened by any version of WMM can also exhibit the behavior you describe "if" the wrong and/or incompatible conversion options were selected. So, have you tried WMM 2.6 on those videos in question?
