Solved 8.1 Install problem with Sonar X3a - OCX Regsvr32.exe prob

I had Sonar X3b 64bit version (a recording studio program) installed in Windows 8 and thought it was working OK. Windows 7 is my "production" system for recording but I had a problem with a couple of plugins with Sonar X3b in Windows 7 and I wanted to test it in Windows 8.1. However, when I tried to start Sonar I got an error (don't remember) so I decided to reinstall the X3b 64 bit version patch but it too aborted with an error. I then did a complete uninstall of Sonar, then restarted the PC and attempted a new install of Sonar X3a 64 bit (install as Administrator). It failed with the regsvr33.exe error (see screenshot below). I had previously had the older version of Sonar X2 installed and working in Windows 8, so I decided to install X2 64 bit version but it too failed with the same error.

Finally, I was able to install Sonar X3a (and the b patch) 32 bit version.

I've tried several fixes for the regsvr32 problem that I found doing searches but nothing fixed it.

I filed a problem report with Sonar Tech Support but it may be days before they respond.

Here is the screenshot of the error. It shows "VS700" device but it will fail on any device.

For further testing, I used my Macrium backup to restore the PC back to just after the 8.1 upgrade. Now, when I try to start Sonar, I get the MSVCR110.DLL error (below). I can't fix that as it says to reinstall the program. That takes me back to the problem first stated in this thread. The problem would appear to be in the Sonar program as MSVCR110.DLL is in both the SysWOW64 and the System 32 folders.

Update, others are reporting the same problems on the Cakewalk/Sonar X series forum. Thus it is a Sonar incompatibility with Windows 8.1.

I have a second system with Win 8.1 and Sonar X2 64 bit installed and it has the exact same MSVCR110.dll problem.

However, the Sonar X3a and b patch work OK if the 32 bit version of the program is installed. The problem is only with the 64 bit version(s).

I'm marking this Solved, even though it isn't, as its a global problem and not just something with my Windows 8.1.

Sorry to hear about the problem, but I have Sonar X3b installed in Windows 8.1 with no problems whatsoever. I don't know what to recommend other than removing the various controller devices, updating, and then re-installing the devices.

Is your X3b, the 32 or 64 bit version? My 32 bit version works OK in Windows 8.1.

There are others that have reported the exact same problem, with the 64 bit version, on the Sonar forum. One person with the problem reported it to Sonar support a week ago and has not heard anything from them. I reported it, originally, as a program bug on CWBRN-20980 and it was closed (in very short amount of time) as a "user problem" and to contact support. I did that yesterday but no response.

I also read, on a different site, that one of the things X3c will address is Windows 8.1 compatibility.

I have another backup system, with Windows 8.1 installed and Sonar X2 64 bit (latest patch version) on that system. I tried it this morning and get the exact same MSVCR110.DLL error.

I don't know why it works OK for some and not others.

Since its a Sonar problem, and the "c" update is supposed address Windows 8.1 compatibility, that was the reason I marked this solved.

I have the 64-bit version. Originally I updated from Producer X2a to X3a and then applied the X3b patch. I had no problems.

The X3c patch was finally released this afternoon. Sadly it did not fix the problem with Windows 8.1. It was originally reported that this update would address Windows 8.1 compatibility but there is nothing in the list of fixes/enhancements about 8.1.

I installed the X3c 64-bit patch with no problems. Sorry, but I have no advice.

In the past I called the registration server manually on the DLL that wouldn't register and that seemed to work in problems like this.

I forget the call, something like: regsrvr32.exe <DLL>
in an admin command prompt.

Read my initial post and the screen shot. It is that Regsrvr problem when I try to reinstall.

Finally Fixed!

I saw a thread on the Windows 7 of Photoshop users (many) with the exact same "MSVCR110.DLL" problem. One response was to reinstall a VB update (see below). I had had tried this, or something similar, at one point but it didn't fix it. I think this is a later update than what I had found before. I tried it with my Win 8.1 install and it fixed the Sonar startup problem. I am now up on the X3c update.

Download Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 Update 3 from Official Microsoft Download Center

I updated with the "VSU3\vcredist_x64.exe" file.
Shut down / Restart / CS6 loaded with the Nik plugin intact and no errors.

MSVCP110.dll is now in my C:\Windows\System32 folder.
