I just updated to windows 8.1 and cannot get the classic shell to work. I have downloaded it but was not asked which form I wanted and so far there is no start button. I cannot find the program anywhere. Also I cannot get avast to open. Is this another glitch in windows?

You probably have to uninstall it and re-install it.

If AVG can't open, is it still there? There is a new strain of Sirefef that has been floating around last week that prevents certain files from being downloaded, they vanish the moment they hit the hard drive. It takes over Windows Defender.

Try this:

http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SOLN2895

See if it lets you download to the drive. If Not, go into Program Files, and change the name of the Windows Defender Folder to "Windows Defender Virus" or "-Old" or something, then try saving the file again.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Had the Classic Shell problem on a Win 8 X64 upgrade to 8.1. Uninstalled and reinstalled it several times, never get the Classic Shell Start Menu icon. If I click on the Start button that comes with 8.1, nothing happens. Press the Windows key and I do get the Classic Shell start menu.

On my Toshiba laptop, I upgraded from Win 8 Pro X86 to 8.1 pro X86 via the store. Classic Shell was already installed on Windows 8.0. After the install, Classic Shell is still installed and works correctly. I did not have to uninstall.

No idea why the difference. So far have not been able to get Classic Shell start button working on the X64 system.

Ok, Avast is no where to be found.I had it on windows 8 but now it is gone. Classic shell is showing in the apps but there is no button in the left corner. I'm not a HE I'm an 83 year old grandmother. LOL It is always fun when no one knows that. I really would like my start button back. Not sure I can find the Defender, but I'll try.

OK. So you are saying that pressing the Win key opens the classic start menu. That means Classic Shell is installed and running. Open the Classic Shell settings from the start screen and either reset them (from the Backup button at the bottom) or poke the settings to find which are misconfigured. You can also save your settings to XML file and attach it here.

Happened to me, too. Did the re-downloaded it, and clicked install, all my settings were where I had left them.

Make sure you are downloading Classic Shell from the correct website (www.classicshell.NET) and not ClassicShell.com

Can't do the xml now as the problem is fixed. The owner of the computer installed Classic Shell 3.6.8 and all is well. Npo idea why the latest 4.0.2 did not work correctly.
