Ok. Those aren't supported in Windows 8. I had the same problem with lots of other software too, not just Winzip. Cost me a lot of $$ and effort to upgrade everything to work on the W8 platform.

I've been using 7zip for years (win xp, win 7 and now win 8). It works very nicely, is open-source which in my book is a plus. and provides many more features than the built-in zip, including support for a LOT of archives (including but not limited to zip, rar, cab, exe, iso), great context menu (I never open 7zip directly), password protection and 256-bit encryption. And I find the 7z format to be usually better at compression than its competitors although when using max compression it's slower than the same in regular zip.

No problem using the 64 bit version either, and best of all it's free (including the libraries if you ever want to develop and integrate compression support in your programs).

    +1 for 7-zip. I use the 64bit version on 8.1

    We have a Winter!

Oh jeez. I forgot about my first post and 7-zip. I did some testing. Done. All my Windows machines are converted 64 & 32-bit (just in time before the snow. Ho-ho-ho.)

Thanks for your kindly (and knowledgeable) recommendations!

One final note for posterity (for both Windows 8 & 7): after install I had to manually associate both file types below to the C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7zFM.exe program (FM stands for File Manager.) Just right-click on a file and “Open With” - then navigate to that .exe file - making sure the box is checked to do that every time.

WinZip not behaving
Hi, I got some excellent advice about a different issue yesterday, but now I am battling with WinZip. I need to send some zipped files, but the default zipper is 7zip, which the other party cannot open. I have the W8 Winzip now, but it zips to a file called zipx. What can I do to have...
