Welcome to Windows EightForums, TomBrooklyn.
Lol! As the others have stated > fluff upon fluff > nothing new.
I see by your profile that you're going to be mainly what I call a "Desktopper" by mainly using your legacy programs of CAD, BIM, and the likes. I'll assume that you're either a professional or student of Architecture and/or Engineering? I can see why you don't want to be bothered with the new Modern/Metro side of the OS. You want to get down to business.
Let me assure you that Windows 8 is a good and stable system just as much as if not more than 7. It also has more system features. Windows 8.1 will be even better to fit your needs, for you'll be able to boot straight to the desktop, bypass the start screen, and use All Apps as a substitute for the Start Menu.
As suggested, uninstall all the fluff for now. Since you bought a new system with 8 on it, you are eligible for a free 8.1 upgrade which I believe it is to be released on the 18th of this month. Some of us are hoping that MS releases an ISO for a fresh install instead of an upgrade via the store. Buy this means you'll be able to eliminate the fluff stuff. Either way you'll eventually be able to get rid of it.
Just a suggestion when it comes to a fresh install of Windows 8 > Title all the columns on the start screen straightway. Eliminate all the tiles and uninstall any of the programs or apps you don't want. That way as you install more programs they will be added to the end of the Start Screen where the tiles will be more manageable to either move/eliminate or title a new column.
I hope that helps with your planning. Nice machine BTW!
