All of a sudden, whenever I open an app on W8 Start menu (click on a tile), the website and/or program opens the desktop. I lost the ability to view open apps by clicking on the top of the page. The web search toolbar on the bottom of the page has also disappeared. Did I change something I wasn't aware of? Can someone tell me how to revert back to the standard?

Sounds like Internet Explorer has been set to open in Desktop Mode only.

Have you installed a different browser recently? Or any software that may have included a browser?

Worth checking. If you hold the windows key and X keys together you should get a menu from the bottom left corner.

Click control panel. Just above the end set of icons on the right it should say View By. Set this to Large Icons.

Look for and left click on Internet Options. At the top, click on Programs. The top option in this view should now be Opening Internet Explorer.

Its here where you need to make sure that tick box is unticked for the App Internet Explorer to work. If you are unable to untick the box, click the link below (see attached picture) and you should be able to untick it.

Click Apply and Ok and it done. You just need to make sure that you close ALL Internet Explorer windows or processes running from Task Manager for the changes to take effect.

Hope that sorts it! :)

Hi Kingtez! Thank you for responding to my question. I resolved the problem before I could read your answer, but I think you were on the right track. I deleted IE as the default browser, intending to change it to Firefox. I didn't realize that would change the way I navigate all programs. Maybe there is a way of getting around this, but for now, I reset IE as the default browser and will just open FF from the Start page.
