To any Developer -- What does "Side loaded apps" mean

Hi there

I thought I could understand a reasonable amount of I.T stuff -- but reading up on some of the FAQS about Windows 8.1 Enterprise version there's a lot of mention of "Side Loaded" apps.

What on earth does this mean -- to me it seems that these applications aren't loaded fully and only work in "Half-assed mode" only but I'm sure Ms doesn't mean that so could someone enlighten me on what this actually means in plain English.

Searching Microsoft TechNet Library clears the confusion pretty quickly and eliminates the need to use harsh language about something unknown. I won't comment on how plain this English is, but it's as plain as you will get for technical terms and concepts.

Typically, Windows Store apps are available only through the Windows® Store. You can submit LOB Windows Store apps to the Windows Store and make them available outside of your enterprise. However, you can also develop Windows Store apps for use only within your enterprise and add them to Windows devices you manage through a process we call sideloading. Sideloaded apps do not have to be certified by or installed through the Windows Store.

Apps that aren't signed by Windows Store can only be installed on sideloading-enabled devices. You can enable sideloading on Windows® 8 Enterprise or Windows Server® 2012 by joining the computer to a domain. To enable sideloading on a Windows 8 Enterprise computer that is not domain-joined or on any Windows® 8 Pro computer, you must use a sideloading product activation key. To enable sideloading on a Windows® RT device, you must use a sideolading product activation key. For more information about sideloading product activation keys, see Microsoft Volume Licensing.

LOB Windows Store apps can be sideloaded onto a PC in the enterprise through scripts at runtime on a per-user basis. They can also be provisioned in an image by the enterprise so that the app is registered to each new user profile that's created on the PC. The requirements to sideload the app per-user or in the image are the same, but the Windows PowerShell cmdlets you use to add, get, and remove the apps are different. This topic provides steps for both methods.

You cannot sideload an app that has been downloaded from the Windows Store. To install Windows Store apps that are not part of your business line, you must use the Windows Store. For more information about the Windows Store, see Managing Client Access to the Windows Store.

I first encountered side loading of apps when I got one of the original Kindle Fire tablets. The Kindle Fire is an Android device but does not have access to the Google Play store, only the Amazon App store. There were lots of apps that were available on Google that weren't available on Amazon. I quickly learned that as long as you can get the .apk file for an app, you could copy it to the tablet, click on it, and the OS would automatically install it and use it. It was referred to as "side loading" since the app wasn't loaded directly by downloading from the app store.

Sounds like Windows apps have a similar way of doing things using the LOB, but also sounds more restrictive.

    Retired in 2015 after working in the tech industry for 41 years. First 10 years as a Technician, the rest as a programmer/software engineer. After 1 year of retirement, I was bored so went back to work as a Robotic Process Automation Consultant. Retired for 3rd (and final) time in 2019.
I noticed this was included with Windows 8 Enterprise. It may be a good selling feature to businesses.

Businesses may now develop (or hire to develop) custom tailored apps to fit their business instead of buying 3rd party software that does not quite fit their business needs. It may be more economically feasible along these lines.

Side loading: ~ getting applications in a manner inconsistent with the standard method of delivery. So, if you force an app for an Android onto your Kindle fire without getting through the Amazon store, you've most likely side loaded it via a PC.

Hi there
Thanks -- we learn something every day. !!

So once the Store becomes the "De factor standard" it means that if I install manually say Photoshop CS6 or the full CS6 suite via a download from the adobe site or an authorized re-seller then that app will be considered as a "Side Loaded" app. Well I hope for the foreseeable future Windows applications will STILL be able to be loaded via standard .EXE or .MSI installation rather than having to go via the store.

Once again, sideloading in the context of Windows 8 means deployment and management of modern apps in an enterprise environment not through Windows store. The app can be developed in house or by a third-party, but the enterprise IT department is in control of sideloading. The term is not applicable to Windows desktop apps, Android apps, Blackberry apps, or iOS apps.
