Windows 8 will not let adobe software updates

I've just loaded Adobe Lightroom 5 and when it checks for updates I get a message suggesting either the my web address is wrong, the enternet connection has a problem or their server is down none of the three apply. And Lightroom isn't the only software this is happening to.

Any suggestions?

Are you running a third party firewall or anti-virus?

Yes, Bit Defender.

I don't know anything about BitDefender, but is it possible it's blocking the requests?

I can assure you, I have no problems updating adobe software on Windows 8 using only the standard Windows Defender anti-virus and firewall.

If its starts, and gets to a certain place (the install), and goes no further - with my laptop at 125 % desktop size the PopUp window wasn't showing the next button, so i reversed it back to 100%, and no problems.
