Windows 8 DVD Maker Missing

Windows 8 is sold without media capabilities, other than basic sound.

To get a DVD Maker, Microsoft wants you to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro, and then buy the add-in Media Center.

I highly recommend the Pro upgrade, but there are many third-party DVD Maker packages available. Try Ashampoo Burning Studio Free here: https://www.ashampoo.com/en/usd/fdl

Of course, that does not address playback. If you wish to use Microsoft's Media Player or Media Center, then yes, buy the add-in. You will also need to look into Codec packages, such as Shark Codecs for Win 7 and for Win 8 here: Standard Codecs for Windows 7 and Windows 8

You can also use Freemake Video Converter:

Save your movie to anywhere on your PC, then burn it directly to DVD. Works great!

yeah, it's a shame that DVD maker is no longer available. the world's moved on to HD and online streaming. most people want to post their vids to Youtube, Vimeo, Flickr, etc.
