What media player can I use on Windows 8, either a freebie or one that I pay for. I used to use Windows Media Player 11 for XP on my desktop (which is now no longer available). I have got my music on my desktop and just want to manage my own music and listen to CD's on my laptop (which has a cd drive). I don't know whether I can use a freebie program or which media player is the most suited. Thanks.

Since I have both Macs and PCs in the house, I use iTunes with the iTunes Match service.

There are dozens of media players/organizers out there. Sort of like asking which beer or soda is the best.

windows media player is still great in Win8.

the default Xbox Music app will be seriously upgraded in Windows 8.1 with a strong focus on local content (MP3's you own) versus now where the main focus is free music streaming.

Microsoft ejects DVD playback from Windows 8 ? The Register

That is for DVD playback. MS has to pay a license fee for every Windows 8 unit to use the DVD codex and they found that the majority of uses were using other programs that included the codex so they decided to offer Windows Media Center with included codex for an extra charge. Third party software like XBMC and VLC include the codex and will play DVD's. The included Windows Media Player does NOT play DVD's as no codex is included.

yeah, DVDs and CDs are different. WMP is pretty much the same as it always was so if you were a WMP fan, no reason to leave unless you want to experiment.

I can't believe anyone would support iTunes, pretty much the worst software experience ever. Bloated, resource-heavy mess. The Windows port is as poor as a port can get. You'd have to be seriously tied to the Apple ecosystem to like it.
