Solved VLC?

This goes for Windows 7 as well, I can't seem to play DVDs or Blu-rays with VLC, I even tried earlier versions with no success.

Has anyone got VLC to work? Using version 2.0.5, it works fine in Gentoo Linux so should work fine in Windows as it's always worked in the past. If it does load I'm waiting like 5 minutes.

Media Player Classic freezes even with compatibility mode for windows 7, Gom media player also freezes.
I actually like Windows 8, but a lot of my source material is on DVDs and blu-ray and burning them may solve this issue but to properly rip them and at the best quality seems redundant when you have the disk...

I just tried version 1.1 and seems to work but the wait time is ridiculous...

I use both Media Player Classic and GOM Player in Windows 8 and both work perfectly.

what codec pack are you using?

Possibly as it works just in about every OS, I've only got 1.1.3 to play dvds/blu-rays.

Could be decoding as well, trying to play some Japanese R2 DVDs.

you should never mix codec packs. choose one and go with it. can cause a lot of conflicts if you don't really really really know what all the settings mean and how all the parts works together.

Installing Codec Pack is a very bad idea and in the long run, you will be encountered with various problems due to conflict, imcompatibility. VLC has its own built in codecs and does not need any additional codec pack. If VLC does not work then there's a problem somewhere else and should be corrected accordingly.

Having said that, there's another freeware called KMPlayer, nice interface, has built in codecs and will play any format/DVD that you can throw at it. Just download and give it a try. Be careful when installing freeware and remember to uncheck any additional bloatware they offer such as google chrome, toolbar, anti virus etc...

Here's a screenshot of what KMPlayer looks like, the skin/color can also be customized as well:

Have you tried getting a disk lens cleaner? I had a similar issue where there wasn't any reading of DVDs in Windows 8 or VLC player. Used a disk lens cleaner, fixed it right up.

As I've said earlier VLC 2.0.5 works in every OS EXCEPT Windows 8, I do not think it's the lens sorry.

I have VLC on several Windows 8 PCs and no disk playback issues.

Is there a driver issue in 8? Has it been uninstalled and reinstalled?

Still doesn't answer why 1.1.3 works where as 2.0.5 does not for dvds/blu-rays anyway works fine with any other format.

Edit: vlc works with DVDs/blurays up to 1.1.9. 2.0 branch for me does not work in windows EXCEPT when I build from source or on Linux. So if DVDs play fine with 2.0.5 on Linux and osx but do not on windows unless compiled from source. Isn't that a bug? Various reports from the same issue for windows but not osx or linux.

Alright...

Was the install of 8 an upgrade or clean install?

Can you find out in 7 if Media Player (or in 8 if you have the Media Center addon) if DVD playback works? Also, is this an issue that has recently cropped up or been like that for a while?

DVDs play fine in media center on 7 never bought the upgrade for 8 though. It seems more of a vlc issue to me and each CVD is encrypted differently.
