LibreOffice 4.02 RC2 has hit the street. Also the web site has been given a face lift. So for those looking for a free Office Suite this is as good as it gets for "FREE.":D

HI there
It's a good one if you just use Basic EXCEL (no VB macros etc) but if you are an EXCEL Power user it's still not even in the same league, The other parts of the suite though are reasonably compatible so for a load of people I suspect it's probably good enough.

For me though I'll continue with Ms Office -- I;ve often looked for alternatives but EXCEL in particular doesn't even have anybody on the Starting Blocks - never mind an actual competitor.

For example here's a relatively simple application I use with EXCEL -- I grab the OPTION PRICES of some stocks from the CBOE and then when the price is what I want it then sends me an alert so I can either place a trade or ignore. No way in Libre Office to get this type of data easily if at all.

Here's an Old trade I did in December on OPTIONS on MSFT (a company I'm sure we all know well -- Microsoft).

Cheers
jimbo

I install it on clients computers that cannot afford to purchase office, or really use it for the basics. For basic use it cannot be beat and why pay for a complete suite if you can have one for free?

Your point is well made, albeit do not bring work home from the office where you use MS Office you could run into problems. . .

I use PowerPoint a lot and I tried Impress. Unfortunately they are not really compatible. Running a .ppst or .ppsx file in Impress works for the visuals, but not for the controls or music/sound - and vice versa it is the same. There is also a lot less function in Impress than in PP.

But as was said, for the casual user it is OK. And for running PP files, you can always get the free PowerPoint Viewer.
