Just recently this problem has affected me. Whenever I want to install a new program/application on Windows 8 desktop (Ventrilo, Ccleaner, etc.) i asks me for permission and I say yes. Nothing else appears afterwards and I cannot delete the installer(.exe file). If I try to delete it it says it is open [filename].exe. I cannot find it in task manager anywhere and I have checked all tabs. What also makes this interesting is that programs (.exes) that i had on my computer before this started happening work perfectly fine and install without a hitch.

I would appreciate any help regarding this issue and will try to provide any extra information you may need to solve this problem.

Thanks for the the response, but I still have the problem where it starts and doesn't do anything after that. The sfc/scannow command detected some flaws so i restarted after but the problem remained. I recently downloaded an exe file in a zip that required no installation. This file took an extremely long time to load but still loaded eventually. This makes no sense to me but I'm guessing that any exe installer file that I had before runs fine but any new one will not.

Try disabling your antivirus and see if the installer will run correctly. Many have reported a similar problem and most were using Norton AV. Now if you try this and it works, I would contact you AV support directly. Good luck.

Thank You!!! It worked finally. I could have sworn one of the first things I did was turn it off and retry but to no avail. This is probably the last straw with my connection to Norton and now have a good reason to get rid of it. Sorry for being off -topic but do you know of any good Windows 8 antiviruses or forum posts about them?

I have been using Avast antivirus for years and I can only tell you that it has worked perfectly for me because I have never been infected and I'm always "warned" before an infected file is auto-downloaded to my PC. In fact, they just released Avast 8 and I think they have worked out most of the bugs (because I was a beta, RC, and RTM tester for the minimum install option). Here's a screenshot of what the interface looks like:

As the installation progressed, I "uncheck" the install Google toolbar option and I opted for the minimal install. Thereafter, I made additional adjustments by clicking on the "settings" link. So, if you decide to try it and you have any post-installation problems, I can get you through them. The only problem that seems to appear from time-to-time is that people using Thunderbird can't access their emails but that usually only happens if they upgrade from Avast 7 to Avast 8. Anyway, here's the download link if you would like to give it a try and I'm hoping you got rid of Norton to the point where it doesn't affect the installation of an alternative AV. Good luck.
