Is Office 2013 worth getting?

I mean, compared to 2010, does it have any disadvantages?

It costs money. It has a really funky smooth scrolling animation. I personally don't like it, but it can be disabled with a registry hack. It's very limited in terms of themes too, you get a choice of white, silver, or slightly darker silver.

I haven't used it.

The Home/Student version had two major disadvantages over the 2010 version, though:

1) The license can only be activated on a single machine. (With 2010, it was 3 machines.)

2) The license was effectively an OEM one; it couldn't be transferred to a new PC.

I have read that Microsoft has relented on #2, and will permit a transfer. I haven't verified that directly yet, but I've seen it reported multiple times.

The license terms make Office 365 look like a better deal. (It's leased software, though. You have to pay to keep the license valid. I believe it's something like $10/month. Forever.

It was worth getting for me, thru Microsoft HUP. Not bad for $9.95

Yeah, when you have access to the Home Use Program (HUP), Microsoft is almost a no brainer. I say almost, because I didn't take advantage of the Home Use Program from my employer when we had it because I don't have Office installed at home. I actually saved my $10.

MS Office 2013 : 2 Questions

Hello Readers,

I know that my questions will be your opinion(s), that said, I am keen to read your views. My questions are:

1. What are the advantages or disadvantages of MS Office 2013 64bit over MS Office 2013 32 bit?

2. Should I choose MS Office 2013 64bit and having MS Office 2010 32 bit installed, is there a way of "keeping all the info in Outlook, Exel" etc.? I believe MS Office 32bit must be removed prior to the installation of MS Office 2013.

Thanks for the info on MS Office 2013. It appears that the 32bit is more versatile that the 64 bit. I am convinced that what ever 32 or 64 bit is installed it must be removed to install the "other" bit version.

after installing viso off of dream spark i found out it was completely redone form it's previous version's.

If you want to try out a bit of Microsoft office 2013 open a skydrive account. You get to use all the applications in office 2013 for free. Skydrive is also free

Also be careful. In the 2013 pro version upgrade it will not uninstall the older version. When I installed it, it put on office 2013 and I still had the complete version of office 2010

For the full price of $139 (one user), the Office 2013 is not a good deal. I just got another 3 user 2010 for $149 (which is not really cheap either). I really wanted 2007, but that cannot be found anymore except on Ebay where I would not buy such an item - too many bad stories.

It depends on what programs you use the most. I personally use Excel the most and I have a monthly financial breakdown sheet in which 2013 offers me flash fill feature that has increased my monthly revenue stream by 12%. Just kidding, but no, it's an awesome time saver.

I personally love 2013, I find it's the best Office version BY FAR. It's so uber smooth and juicy, the UI is very clean looking, the Backstage view (Start Screen) is more improved over 2010, and has some new features in the apps themselves than 2010 did over 2007. Again, this depends on if the features are worthwhile. If you use Word a lot and read documents or work on them, a new feature is this bookmarking feature thing where it goes right where you left off in a document, REAL handy for sure. That, along with MUCH better improved SkyDrive integration, so if you do work on a document between multiple PCs, you can have that document saved to SkyDrive, work on it from home and work on it from your browser elsewhere from Outlook.com. From there, you can go home and the changes are downloaded right away. Time saver.

Also for pricing, 365 beats out 2010. Office 365 is the more cloud based/subscription based version of Office 2013. It's the same thing, but less expensive. Some will debate the merit of that, but it's a tad pointless. Basically, you get the 2013 equivalent of Pro Plus, so ALL the Office apps, along with 25 gigs of SkyDrive storage (handy to use for photo backups) and able to use a license up to 5 different PCs. All of this for a total of 100 dollars a year. You can basically pay as you want, so if you're in school and have major white collar work to do (i.e. Word) for a few months, you can pay 10 dollars a month if you like to use the installed Office apps. You get a 30 day grace period though to reactivate the subscription though. This is better than the elder method as you will get upgrade to Office 2016 or whatever it is for FREE, whereas if you just bought 2013 Home and Student for 150 or so dollars or whatever it costs, you would have to pay that again to upgrade. BUT, 365 includes all the Office apps, like Outlook. So if you use that, you actually would have to pay 500 dollars for Pro Plus.

Basically, you can pick and choose to do whatever you want.

Maybe this is irrelevant but if any of you are willing to go through a learning curve, have a try at the free OpenOffice 3.4.1. I've been using it for quite a while to type up my book. It has a lot of other stuff when you download it, e.g. Draw, Base, Math, Calc, besides the Writer, I used the previous version before I bought a new notebook with Win8, & I though it was great. I've now downloaded the new version to this notebook.

I am using Libre Office (which I believe is similar as Open Office) on my Linux Mint system. The Writer (= Word) is fine for normal usage. Impress (= PowerPoint) has less function than PP but is quite useable.

The main problem I have is that there is no real compatibility for e.g. PP/Impress files. They play somehow in the other environment but the embedded sound, the timings, etc. does not work. So you cannot really exchange files between MS Office and Libre Office.

The inability of Libre Office to inter act with MS Office is one of the reason a few companies and cities are going back to MS Office. They are finding out it cost more to work in an environment that is not on the same level as is most of the people they are working with.

I use KingSoft Office Pro which gives you the ribbon along with the ability to work with Word and Excel document without to much of a Problem (not completely error free). But, as I am no longer attached to any company/corporation (retired) then the need for a huge Office suit is no longer needed.

I got Office 2010 by HUP, but now that I'm out of the company Office 2013 (legal) will have to wait a bit.

I had Office 2013 running on windows 8, 8.1 and 8.1.1 and the font rendering in Outlook and Word was dreadfully blurry.
The cause of the problem is that the greyscale font rendering API used by Office 2013 is inferior to the RGB font rendering API used in Office 2010.

I got so fed up with the headache inducing blurry text, I reverted back to Office 2010 (on Win 8.1.1). The text is now clear.
