Office 2013 to be the last non subscription version

Hi there
judging by the latest advertising for Office 365 (subscription model - up to 5 PC's) and the restriction of Office 2013 being fixed to the ORIGINAL computer (i.e you can't move it when getting a new computer) I'd suspect that future Office products will now be only subscription models.

I don't like this idea and am not going down this route. I'll keep Office 2010 for as long as possible --and if Windows itself goes subscription only then Linux Mint or whatever -- Here I come. (Libre Office also seems to be improving -- but I'm quite a power user of EXCEL so it's not quite ready for prime time for me).

Cheers

I have about a third or more of my users using office 2003 right now. No problem, simple, familiar, gets the job done. Why would I want to belly up to the table and drop down more money for 2013 or subscription models?

I wonder how much money 2003 would have cost me if we had subscriptions for the past 10 years instead of a one time pruchase of the software? I think Microsoft contemplated this same question . . .

Hi there
For a lot of people - unfortunately not me yet

LibreOffice Productivity Suite Download » LibreOffice

and it's FREE. V 4.0 is getting pretty compatible with Ms office -- at least for basic users.

Thankfully, for those who don't want to go the subscription route, or don't feel the necessity to stay on the latest versions, there are solid alternatives available.
  • Open Office
  • Google Docs
  • Microsoft Web Apps via Skydrive
  • Previous versions of Office we might already own.

As far as Office 365 goes, I really don't see it as a rip-off provided that you need access to move than just basic word processing and spreadsheet and you have 2 computers or more that you wish to use. If you need Outlook, or Access, or Publisher...you are looking at an Office 2013 Pro license which is $400 for each computer. If you needed that on 2 computers, that would be $800. That would cover 8 years of Office 365 and that would give you the ability to run on up to 5 computers rather than just 2. And for those who desire to stay on the latest and greatest, this model gives you that ability without additional cost.

Hi there
Don't forget if you NEED outlook / Access or Publisher these programs are available individually so you don't always have to have an Office PRO subscription -- just add the individual components to the Basic student and Teacher edition (which works on 3 computers anyway).

Also there are various Use at Home or Student facilities available for Office 2007 / 2010 -- and you can source Full Office 2007 really cheaply now.

There's nothing really new in any version of Office after 2007 -- apart from Touch, Collaboration documents and things like Lync (rather like a corporate version of "Facebook").

Typical home users won't need any of these so 3 copies of Office 2007 PRO can be had for around 100 USD.
Cheers.

Yes, these add-ons are around $100 each. And the 3 computer option works on Office 2010 and below....not to the Office 2013 version which is what I was price quoting on.

But many aren't going to spend money right now on the old versions. Although in terms of the new licensing schemes or subscription only, maybe they will.

We use Lync at work, it's very nice. Online meetings, recordings, heck we are even adding enterprise phone now and considering getting rid of our standard phone system. It's more than "Facebook".

Yep, if they don't mind being on an older version, it's not an issue.

I have a copy of Office 2013 through the "Home Use Program". I wonder how the concept of HUP will deal with the transcription future of Office. Right now I have a copy of Office Pro for €13. No annually payment can compare with that (or it should be like €5 per year).

That's cool so £8/month instead of ££££ for 5 computers. I'll save loads!

Careful, you're not allowed to feel happy or sound positive on any new Microsoft products since XP.

Or it could even be after the Civil War.

Or since they started distilling Whiskey.

I do too and I subscribed to it a few days ago, even though I don't need all it's features, it's cheap enough to make it worthwhile. I also like the clean modern minimalistic look.

It sounds like 2013 may have a perpetual license but it is by no means the type of 'ownership' most people think of when they buy software. 2013's single PC license is nothing more than a carrot to lead you to the more friendly subscription model. In the end it doesn't sounds like either version of Office is going to garner much love outside of the corporate stratosphere. There are just too many other options more tailored for consumer needs than Office. Personally, I use 2010 on my work laptop and outside of work I don't. If I need something in a pinch I'll use free Office online.

It is funny because we never used to be an "Office" shop back in the day. We used Word Perfect but so many others companies we dealt with used Office that we eventually switched just to be more compatible. It seems as if MS is pushing the pendulum in the other direction now. Driving home and business users to seek out a more economical solution. Inevitably more and more people will move away from the .doc format and in turn that will drive an even greater exodus.

I will say this again. If you deal with people regularly that have MS Office, the free alternatives, OpenOffice and LibreOffice
WILL corrupt files when edited and transferred back and forth.
It is not a matter of does it happen, but when, cause it does happen extremely often.

So, no, they are not good alternatives in every respect. They just aren't. It can be proven every time you try.

With that said, if you are never going to send them off to an MS Office user to manipulate or edit, your fine, otherwise, get MS Office also.

Now, to add to that, the Office Subscription is actually not a bad deal. but if they do this with Windows, forget it, I will be moving to Linux.

Think again on corporate. Most companies kept Windows XP until Windows 7. Heck, we are just now going to Windows 7. Companies were on Office 2003 for years and we just now upgraded to Office 2010. Companies use enterprise licenses, so if those went away companies would stick with the old. At least mine would.
