Hi. I used Infozip to create a .zip file with .jpg's. A 60,718,199 byte directory of .jpg images compressed into a 59,898,728 byte .zip file. Not what I had in mind.

I want to copy a bunch of photos... about 2.85Gig onto CDs. Any help, tips would be appreciated.

Hello,

From my experience, JPEGs are already compressed so they don't get that much smaller when you try to archive them to a zip file. The only image type that I have any success in compressing is a bitmap file.

Good luck.

Hi topguncp,

I'd have to see it to believe it so could you please do a test compression of any image to see if you can get anywhere near that 1/10th the size of the original claim? And, could you please post the before and after images as well? Thanks a bunch!

I said up to 1/10. Not every image will give you that ratio but here is a sample, the original image is 190K and compressed to 28K
which is about 1.5/10

Very, very impressive. It does work well. Thank you for taking the time to respond. Unfortunately, I can't give you another rep yet; however, your response is on my "give another rep" list after I spread some more around.

You are very welcome. BTW, I use this for Website development and also for email which you want images to be small.

Another use is to set desktop background so it does not take long to load at Windows Start up. Here is the Windows 8 BG, which is 1.1/10

I also maintain several websites for friends and family members that have businesses; however, for my purposes, I don't care how large the image may be... as long as it looks as good as it possibly can because the people won't buy the products (example: A reproduction of an original painting) unless they like what they see. And, with today's broadband internet speeds, I have not run across any complaints. Sorry, but those who are still on dial-up service will just have to wait a bit longer to view my images.

Cheers!

Oh boy! That is one beautiful background!! I'm glad my wife wasn't looking over my shoulder and I'm sorry that I missed the actual image comparison but "they both" looked good!!!

For me, it's important because I develop website for photographers using FLASH which play slide show in full screen every 5 seconds so short loading time is a must.

Hi topgundcp,

So, I thought the OP wanted to store a large quantity of JPEGs on a standard CD, "without" reducing the image quality, and that is why I responded accordingly. However, if the OP is willing to "reduce" the quality and then zip them to a CD, your solution does work. Now, adding to the list of possible solutions, I would recommend Photofiltre. This program is totally free and portable (no nags) and it can be downloaded here:
PhotoFiltre Portable | PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB, portable and cloud drives

It is also capable of doing batch conversions and has variable (batch) quality settings. See image below:

photofiltre.jpg

So, I did a conversion of your w8_2001.jpg image (191kb original) and cut the quality to 50% (by using the slider in the image above) and the resultant image quality and new file size (26.9kb) was similar to your conversion results. The only difference I can see between the two programs is that Photofiltre is totally free and portable.

Cheers again!

Thanks for the info. We learn new things from others every day.
Yes, You did exactly what OP asks, I just provide the alternative because I don't think any zip program can do any further compression (Winzip, Winrar, 7-Zip etc...) as you already mentioned. The free program above, We need to explore a little bit more with some other images and compare the compression & resolution to see how good the result is.

Cheers

Hi topgundcp,

So, I thought the OP wanted to store a large quantity of JPEGs on a standard CD, "without" reducing the image quality, and that is why I responded accordingly.....

Yeppers. Thanks for the feedback. I was looking for a 'compressor program' type of solution, not a photo-editing program biggerfile / higherquality <-> smallerfile / lowerquality compromise/solution.... Something like the Infozip -9 option- Compress Better (which doesn't really help for .jpgs, BTW).

It's for a friend... and I didn't want to be in a position to decide for him: how small the pictures should be, and how much loss he could tolerate- to squeeze them onto the CDs.

Tried the Advanced JPEG Compressor program. It worked pretty well though.... The pics seemed good- to me (but what do I know?). Reference above paragraph for caveat.

The CDs was a request. A DVD obviously would work... but is a little less portable. Ended up just buying more CDs to burn all the pics with their original sizes onto them.

Thanks for all of your responses. Good stuff here.

It does look like more artifacts are introduced in the smaller image if you zoom in a little. So the program appears to basically recompress the image in JPEG format but use more aggressive lossy compression parameters.

To the OP, does the target media have to be CDs? Why not DVD or flash drive?

Yes, that's exactly what it does and of course any image if you zoom it large enough, eventually you'll see some artifact but you can also adjust the compression rate so that will be acceptable.

I agree topgundcp. The beauty of JPEG is that you can optimize the compression versus how you want to use the image. If your objective is to view the image 1:1 on a screen and not, for example, print it at high resolution, then often times the compression level used in files is lower than necessary and one can reduce the size without visible effect by increasing the level of compression.
