    Unified UI

Here is an image that Microsoft has been showing to delegates at this year’s Worldwide Partner Conference … and it disturbs me.

Here we see a notebook (or possibly a netbook), and tablet system, the Xbox games console and a Windows Phone device all featuring the tiled “Metro UI” look that people using Windows Phone handsets will recognize. What Microsoft is showing here is plans to unify the entire ecosystem.

Hopefully there will always be options.

Even the Metro UI on a laptop or desktop might not be too bad using a mouse. I'm sure they will keep the standard UI for those that want it, I think that is the one I'll use.

I think the Metro UI is a good thing. I comapare it to the Ribbon. A lot of people had problems with it at first, but now that you find it in many components and not only Office, it is very helpful.

Like anything new, it just takes a little time to learn and get use to.

I didn't like the Ribbon the first few times I used it, but now find it useful.

Ok, you can have them but, I might need them again later

I disagree -- it's not just a question of 'getting used to' something new. How the Desktop is configured should have more to do with how the owner USES his/her system than how pretty or interesting something looks. Yes, it's great to have an attractive Desktop, no question about that. But we need to be able to configure it to OUR NEEDS. So long as Microsoft gives us those options, I have no complaint --- but I'm afraid that in the not-too-distant-future we will have less (or none) of those options.

I think we will have more options for the desktop with each next version of Windows.

I would think so too. And then our ways of handling things will change also. I am hardly ever on my desktop which is more or less blank anyhow. I run everything from the taskbar, the Rocket Dock and my extensive toolbars. I never understood why people would have shortcuts on the desktop - especially since they get scrambled occasionally.
