I wanted to edit the Hosts file to add something to it. I opened notepad++ and navigated to where it was and I couldn't see the etc directory in windows/system32/drivers/ with the file open in notepad++. I navigate in explorer and right click on hosts and edit with notepad++ and that works fine. Now I can navigate with windows notepad just fine. I asked a friend to try and it can see it fine and open it in notepad++. This is frustrating. I add some sites to it to block adware and spyware. I know my security suite can do this but I still double protect myself

I did do group policy edites like on this forum Tired of UAC & Security Prompts? Tell Windows that you're the admin! - Windows 8 General Discussion - Help and Discussion and here http://www.eightforums.com/system-s...e-windows-8-understand-you-administrator.html

I just would like to know why he can and I can't? I have turned uac off completely and did those 2 group policy edits. That is all I did.

Now I am not the greatest with all this stuff. I google what I need to figure out and then follow those steps.

Now I just want to add to this that I downloaded EditPad Lite and it has no issues finding the hosts file.

Right click on notepad++ and run as Administrator then you'll be able to do anything.

Sorry to say that is not correct in my case. I forgot to say I had tried that to no avail. Still won't see it. Now I do have a peculiar situation. When I look at the Drivers directory in windows explorer its has a capital "D" and when I look at it in Notepad++ is has a small "d". When I browse there with Windows Notepad it also has a capital "D"

Again this is particular to my system. A friend tried it on his system without right clicking and was able to see it.

I guess that is a solution but doesn't solve the issue of why you can't browse with notepad++ to the folder hosts is in and open it to edit it.
