How to install Java on Windows 8?

I have IE10 and Chrome version 24 on my Windows 8 desktop.

I have gone to java.com/en/download/win.jsp?locale=en and downloaded Java onto my laptop. I then right click on the file and click "Run as administrator". It then asks me if I want to give approval to run the executable and I answer yes. At this point, nothing happens.

I have tried this with Chrome and IE 10 and I have tried to install it from the Desktop screen.

Could someone please tell me how to correctly install Java as I can't seem to be able to do so.

    Thank you

    Carmen

You need both 32 & 64 bit java in windows 8.
Just running the exe should work.
You don't need to run as administrator.
    Have you tried here--

How do I test whether Java is working on my computer

The java site has lots of help articles.

Java is a serious security thread, National Security Agency recommended not to upgrade to latest version, but to fully uninstall that product, unless you really need it.

I sent the java people a problem report.
I am waiting to get a response.
You can send a report/complaint to them here--

    Java Technology, Report an issue

By the way my java-- 32 & 64 bit --suddenly stopped working & I removed them.
I tried re-installing them but failed.
Hence the bug report to sun.com !
I hope they get back to me.

Maybe new installs of java have been stopped by the java people because of this security threat !???

The way things are now, I would stay away from Java unless you really need it.
