MS Movie Maker will not work with my Windows 8 - HELP!!!

Hi everyone,

I need some help. I film online classes, so I'm really up against a time crunch as I have a production team waiting on me, let me cut to the chase....

I need my Movie Make to work. It worked just fine when I had Windows 7, but now (As a Windows 8 user) when I try to save anything the system says it is trying to repair the problem and then kicks me out.

I only really use Movie maker for the trim tool and a few other features, as it is so easy to use. However, I have an enormous file that will not compress any further. I need to trim it in order to send it but Movie Maker will not allow me to.

How do I fix this? Is there another option? Why is Movie Maker not compatible with 8?

I used the program from way back in the past.

It came as a feature in Windows XP and Vista.
After I used Win7 I read that I have to rely to a newer online downloaded version.... but I copied the one from Vista and it worked fine.
It still works on Win8, no issues. So you might give it a try if you still have a Vista iso or install somewhere.

Another thing, if you know VLC, they began making a movie maker based on VLC. It's still in development like more than alpha but you can check that out if interested:

This one works for some simple project but I recommend you stick with the Windows Movie Maker for more stability.

Personally, the Movie Maker form Vista is the way to go, but every one has its own preference.

I think I have a later version. My computer came with Windows 7, bought it late last year. Then I upgraded to Windows 8 the beginning of this month. Ever since Movie maker has been on el fritzo. Where do I go to get the latest version?

I just downloaded WLE 2012 and selected to download movie maker and picture viewer. went to my pictures, picked 4 pictures and added some music and saved it. It saved it just fine, closed out software, went to destination folder and found it and played video...it played just fine.

OK I have been experimenting - Uninstalled everything to do with the movie maker and started again.

I find that it couldnt read the MPEG files from my video camera ( they were fine on Vista ) So I tried converting them

I checked the new movie maker help pages and it says -- I can use all these files

  • Video files: .asf, .avi, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, and .wmv

I have experimented and now find that MPEG can be viewed on the timeline but only the audio plays on the preview screen and

WMV can be viewed on the preview screen but not the timeline ????????

In any case I dont want to have to convert everything it takes ages

I havent got any further so dont know if anything else works

BTW, did the update, now Movie Maker is in French. Awesome....guess it is good I can read french. :)

Movie Maker from Vista is superb. The Windows version from 7 was abysmal, so I took it from my old Vista machine and loaded it onto my 7 PC. Now I've downgraded to 8.1, is it the same process as described here;

Thanks.

We have a new Windows 8.1 PC which operates fine but Movie Maker stops during editing the Project every time! Projects include .jpg-photoes and short .avi videos.
We reinstalled the whole Windows Live package: no help! We have also Media Plaer installed ok. What to do??

(We have used Movie Maker with W7 PC a lot and were very satisfied with it.)
