Can't do Direct Screen-Shot Capture. Thoughs?

I'm using a 6-7 year old HP lappy for Win8 Pro. No uEFI, but I don't think having uEFI or not is likely to matter WRT my problem (could be wrong though). I can't do the direct screen-shot capture described in this tutorial. I don't think the snipping tool can be used to do what I want. Actually, I am not sure the screen-shot capture would do the job either. I am trying to get a screen shot particularly of the metro start screen and also some other metro screens. Does anyone know if the screen-shot capture allows one to get screen shots in the metro area? Is there any way to get them using the snipping tool? Is there any other screen-shot software that would get the job done?

Can you suggest a fix for my installation assuming that's the problem? Automatic repair repaired nothing, and sfc /scannow found no corruption. I won't do a reset, refresh, or other reinstall of my system to eliminate my problem.

Does alt-printscreen do anything for you? On my system, it captures a screenshot to the Windows clipboard. I can paste it into Paint (the desktop application).

Thank much for our reply. Great question. Actually, no. I should have made that clear. I am having trouble there also. Printscreen does nothing either. My keyboard driver looks good to go in Device manager. 8 Pro installed it. It is not a Vista driver--as came with my machine. The Vista driver, as though, is not available on the HP site.

Thanks for the reply. I had tried that. No workie on this machine. My main problem seems to be that print screen isn't working.

Well, If that's the case then you need: Download Snagit Free Trial
which you can re-assign the PrintScreen key to something else, for example: F8

Here's the screen shot:

Thanks. The problem may be with my keyboard/driver, in general, but I am not sure. Do you know if you can get screen shots in general from the metro area with a properly functioning print screen whether used in combo with win key or alt, by itself, with snagit, or whatever?

I don't quite understand what you meant. I thought your PrintScreen Key is bad so you want to avoid using that key by re-assign it to another key or a combo of keys to perform capturing.

HaHaHa Now I know what you meant. So, never mind what I said last. One thing I'd really like to know at this point is:

"Do you know if you can get screen shots in general from the metro area with a properly functioning print screen whether used in combo with win key or alt, by itself, with snagit, or whatever?"

I guess you tried the snipping tool as you suggested above. I have not tried exhaustively, but my experience has been that the snipping tool doesn't work if I change anything after invoking the tool--on any of my Win machines. Again, I haven't really tried very hard. Just easy cases like, maybe, opening the Win7 start menu to get a shot of it. Generally, if I, for example, open this menu and then start the snipping tool, the menu disappears. The other way around the snipping tool doesn't work.

I don't understand why you are complicating it with Win key and alt. With a functioning PrintScreen Key, you can capture anything on the screen: Metro Screen, partial Metro Screen, Popup Menu, Cascading context menu etc.... Just follow exactly the steps that I showed earlier using Snipping Tool and Ctrl+PrintScreen.

Edit:
Use all there at once with print screen or what?
Just ding on me. The answer is ctrl or alt or Shift or any combination of those with F1-FXX or Page up, Page down etc...

I don't think I am complicating things. I think I am replying logically to things you and others have said--although sometime not understanding what you were getting at. I would settle :D for knowing if you, personally, have been able to get a screen shot of the metro start screen, and, if so, how you did it? If you have multiple ways of getting the shot, then I'd like to know what they are, but would be perfectly satisfied to know just one procedure you have used to get the shot.

As indicated, your snipping tool instructions are not working for me.

Briefly skimming this thread, it sounds as a whole that the PrntScrn key is damaged or something. Try running a key testing program, sorry that I can't get a link right now as I post most of the time from my iPod.

One thing you can try, is MWSnap, I'm not sure if it works with Metro UI.

Sorry for being inconveniently short on help right now, but if it's still unanswered in the morning, I'll look into it.

OK, let's start it over again:
With a functioning PrintScreen Key:

  1. Start Snipping Tool. If it is in capture mode, that is the screen is kind of greyed out, then press Escape to get out of capture mode.
  2. Display the screen that you want to capture, whether it's metro screen, context menu, start menu etc...
  3. Press Ctrl + PrintScreen key, this will put Snipping tool back in capture mode without making anything disappear
  4. Use your mouse to click and drag over the area that you want to capture. If you want the full screen then move your mouse to the left top corner and drag it to the bottom right corner then release it.

With a Non functioning PrintScreen, I also have a solution for that using Snipping Tool but let's leave it for later.
