One comment. Once an audio file is converted (compressed) to an MP3 for example, the full fidelity of the original wav file (or CD audio file) is lost (what extent is lost depends on the compressed file type or bitrate). Converting it back to a wav file, for instance, will not restore the fidelity. You will still have the fidelity of the MP3 file.

I'm a musician and have a recording studio. I've had people bring me a CD with MP3 files and ask if I can convert it and make it better. The answer is always no.

Good information, Jack. A lot of people don't realize that. Also true for a lot of Video conversions. Got the wife a Sony E-reader last year and when she found out a lot of books had audio versions also thats what she likes. She is into the Stefanie Plum series by Janet Evonovich. When traving she plugs it into the MP3 jack of the car radio and we both enjoy. I get the books from our local library and then convert to MP3 for her to use.

For free software try this (Format Factory 3.0.1) it dose almost every format.
Download link FormatFactory - CNET Download.com

This is best free converter that I have every used my self, they are upto v3.1.1 now.

Hi there

I have to differ -- also there's no FLAC option which IMO is the best way of keeping UNCOMPRESSED music. FLAC is LOSSLESS COMPRESSION and although WAV is fine too FLAC occupies far less Disk space.

Why not simply use VLC -- It's FREE and THIS is probably the best FREE converter around. Also has the added advantage in that it PLAYS almost every known video and audio codec known to man.

(Most people haven't realized that VLC can actually do this -- it can also convert VIDEO formats too !!!).

BTW once you've done your conversion you can tag it with : Mp3tag - Download

Click on the Union Jack for English version. (It tags FLAC etc very easily).

Cheers

That's genius! Thanks for the idea :D

Wait, I'm a bit confused are you converting just the audio of the music videos or the video too? I use this The Audio Cleaner Pro music converter for your CDs - by MAGIX but that's only for converting audio. If you're converting video too maybe handbrake can do both?
sorry but I really wanted to use this emoticon lol :dinesh:
