I actually like Windows 8 and want to use it, but I am having a problem with several tiles including: The New York Times, Bing Search (standard Windows 8 tile), and Weather (standard Windows 8 tile). When I try to access Settings for the NYT, I get the message "windows 8 can't get settings for this app right now." I also cannot click on any articles.

In Bing, I get the same error message, and only get the splash screen and sometimes the circling dots thing; but it doesn't open.

Weather has the same problem as Bing.

All of my other tiles seem to work fine, including third party tiles (such as AccuWeather).

Is there a list of items I can check on my machine to resolve this problem? They all seem related.'

I tried Windows Refresh. I also tried running apps.diagcab.

I am almost ready to either ditch Windows 8 and go back to Windows 7 or buy a new computer with Windows 8.

Thank you,

Gabe

P.S. I clicked on the Wikipedia tile and it said that the app need to be repaired. It was re-downloaded and installed again from the Windows Store and worked fine. The other broken tiles aren't doing this.

I tried to do it manually. The apps install fine, but with the same problem.

Is there someone out there having the same problem?

Thanks,

Gabe

I installed the latest graphics driver for Win 8. No difference.

Update: I couldn't get the tiles to work after much research and attempted tweaking. Also, reinstalling 8 didn't work, so I am back on Windows 7 64 which works like a charm (pun intended). Perhaps it's just my machine. But then again, it's a very mainstream HP desktop that is only 2 years old. Very disappointed, but glad to have Windows 7 again.

For anyone this may help: Windows 8 now appears to be working correctly after re-installing as follows. I did a factory reset of my desktop computer to Windows 7 64, installed all 140+- updates, removed Norton, re-installed Windows 8. That's it. My initial problem seems to be related to having Avast running while installing Win8, and having too many legacy programs on my computer prior to the upgrade.
