I agree about the torrent sites,... i had some problems in the past with viruses. But all i was saying there is just not so much info on 64bit software and today majority of people use 64bit processors and OS on their PC's and laptops and such...

But why do you want 64 bits apps ? the 32 bits work perfectly in Windows 8 , I have not check with Windows 8 but with Windows 7, Microsoft Office x64 was not that great.

I know about 32bit software working perfect on 64bit architecture,... but i have read somewhere that 64bit software works better and is more stable than 32bit software,.. i have been on windows 7 64bit so i know all about advantages and disadvantages of 32bit software.

and also: 64bit and x64 - Start64! - Start on 64
and some others...

Sites like these put a lot of 32bit programs on the lists! That's just to fill the gaps for the moment.

And soon you'll see:
"REPORT TO US: This software is not 64-bit native!!!"

You can see in Task Manager if a program runs in 64 or 32bit (Win7: marked as *32 and Win8: marked as (32bit))

From usage experience, you can build your own list.

Here's what I can add to the certified x64 list:

-Stellarium (recently made in 64bit): Stellarium
-VirtualBox (x64 core + x64 interface)
-Vmware Player / Workstation (x64 core + x86 interface)
-Most of the MS Sysinternals Suite
-DosBox x64 (working builds): VOGONS :: View topic - Building 64-Bit Dosbox 0.74 with Visual Studio 2010 SP1
-PE Explorer (google it)
-GIMP (extras: recently the normalmap plugin is also x64, to be found on googlecode)
-Adobe Photoshop (extras: normalmap with nVidia x64 plugin)
-Adobe After Effects
-3DS Max
-Cinema 4D
-Blender

-Free stuff from Sourceforge
(from some easy code opensource projects I built x64 myself like Multiple Desktops: Multiple Desktops for Windows | Free Development software downloads at SourceForge.net) mostly I failed because I'm no compiler expert.

-Eclipse IDE
-mingw64 compiler
-vs2010 compilers
-Java
-Adobe Flash (11 and above)

-Waterfox (x64 version of Firefox)
-Pale Moon (the same but older, I never used)

-7Zip
-WinRAR

-Office 2010 and above

-VLC player
-MPC Homecinema player

...And many others (some still to come).

Hope this helps a bit (a 64bit).:)

but i have read somewhere that 64bit software works better and is more stable than 32bit software,...

Not always. In some cases where there are early builds like first versions in 64bit, you can consider them less stable than 32bit ones.
It also depends on how well the software was tested. More steble or not, I also prefer the 64bit versions since I use x64 Windows for more than just the one reason (more RAM memory allocation).

You can see some serious (sometimes a bit, sometimes more) improvements in x64 with programs like converters (video, audio, imaging) 2D/3D renderers, file archivers and AV scanners.

Remember that not all software has to be 64bit. Less-demanding applications don't have to be 64bit because you won't feel the benefit.

Thanks Hopachi man, this is a great help,... Yes i know what you are saying, but the point is there are so much more benefits when you compare 64bit architecture to 32bit, in terms of stability and fluidity and safety... First commercial 64bit OS was Windows XP 64-Bit Edition released on October 25, 2001...that's a big gap my friend.

You're welcome.
Glad I could help with this.

As I said, I'm also in favor of 64bit since all my pc's use that now.:)

Good luck in finding the right programs. Some are harder to find than others.

Going with the 64 bit version is not always better or recommended. Microsoft did not recommend the 64 bit version of office 2010 and instead suggested that most sick with the 32 bit version.

As others have stated, stay away from the torrent sites for your software. There are so many good free alternatives to pick from these days. And if they won't cut the mustard, then you should probably consider purchasing the commercial equivalent.

They recommend... Hmmm.. Well of course you can use what you like.
They also recommend using Metro and touchscreens for Win8, do they?...:)

Just to make sure you can use all available plugins, use the 32bit version. Its true that today the difference in performance between the 2 Office's versions is insignificant for normal usage.

The way I see it: The 64bit Office version was made for a good reason: future replacement of the legacy 32bit version. 32bit applications (even on syswow64) get a max of 2 to 4 GB memory but you notice that with time files get bigger and bigger, pc's get more memory, disk drives get bigger and bigger, and programs will have to use more memory to meet their generation requirements. (Remember what specs our pc's had in the begin 90's! They changed much since then.)
So Office64: There has to be someone to use it, someone to test it and someone to report bugs otherwise we will have problems with it.

I've been constantly using the 64bit Office version and never had problems. It's mostly because I do basic Word docs spreadsheets and Excel calculations, nothing too advanced. It should suffice for basic home use.
Excel 2010 opens in 0.5 seconds on Win8 x64 and I'm pleased with the performance. All seems to be very stable (no crashes).

Everyone know that Office 64 is not stable, at least me, I have all the Microsoft Software ISO in my server, why I'm using 32 bits Office version, if 64 is better ?

It's not that 64bit versions of Office are unstable. It's usually 3rd party plug-ins and add-ons that tons of software use which integrate with Outlook and Office which may or may not work with a 64bit version of Office.

While there are speed and performance advantages to working with large file sets....I don't think many of us use 2GB spreadsheets on a regular basis. That's the type of thing they are talking about when they mention large data sets.

Oh, I now that Excel can be heavily used, but I bet that the overwhelming majority of Office users don't have files that would qualify as "large datasets" as defined by Microsoft.

Out of curiosity, even with their payroll or entire inventory in Excel...how big of spreadsheets are we talking about? More than 2GB?

There's no need for us to argue about this. We already know the basic differences between the two versions.

Is a bit confusing...
I hope this means the RAM usage and no the disk space the file takes.
A 300mb opened file can consume up to 2gb of RAM memory with no problem.
