\\\When I first bought my laptop, it was running windows 7 and home and student 2010, I then upgraded to the win8 release preview, and i was still able to use word, powerpoint, etc. Now when i upgraded to windows 8, they are in the "windows.old " folder, when i try to open them, an error message pops up saying that the file is not installed. How to i get these programs back??? I paid money for this!!!

You will need to re-install Office 2010. Sounds like to me when you did the upgrade you didn't upgrade with the apps setting.

Hope that helps. You should be able to use the Office Key you have for 2010 as long as it's on the same computer it was originally installed.

Hope that helps.

Yes, you should have files on the desktop that you can use to make an ISO file to reinstall your OS. In addition, from what I read there should have been an email with a link to the download location to download it again.

Found this solution when I searched your error.

"I was able to get around this error by the following steps:1: Open internet explorer.
2: Go to getfirefox.com
3: Download and install Firefox
4: Launch fire fox. Go to https://office.microsoft.com/en-us/MyAccount.aspx
5: download and install.

Congrats Microsoft, I had to use Firefox to be able to download a file. Your browser works so great!

Oops.

While Microsoft lets you upgrade from the RP (release preview) to the released version of Win8, you aren't allowed to do an upgrade-in-place. You'd need to revert to Windows 7 (with Office pre-installed) and upgrade that to 8 to keep Office.

It may be possible to legally download and install Office, if you had a key. (Download Office 2010 (Official Direct Download Links) « My Digital Life) The key can probably be retrieved with a keyfinder, but usually only when Office is installed. (It isn't now.)

I wish that Microsoft made this clearer.

Makes me glad that I have no pre-installed software on any of my PCs that I needed to keep.

Just as an FYI, I did not need Firefox to install this.
Install completed perfectly from IE10 in Win8 without issue in less than 10 min.
So, yes, IE 10 does work great.

However, if you have Chrome installed (which is complete garbage and trashes IE) then that could be your problem.
And before anyone jumps on the Chrome Wagon, I deal with it far too often with work where it has to be uninstalled, Firefox has to be installed and set as default browser and then IE set back to default browser, to fix Chromes garbage.
And, Chrome doesn't work with all sites, especially a lot of corporate sites. So yes, Chrome is garbage.
