Are you talking about the Metro browser, or the desktop browser? Not sure if Java works in Metro.

The only plug in that works in the Modern UI version of IE is the scaled-down version of Flash that is pre-packaged with the browser. In order to use any plug-ins, you need to open IE on the Desktop.

Ok. So, obviously it's installed. Good.

FYI, Mystere and Kebero are correct in that it's not an add-on in Modern (Metro) version.

A few things to check via desktop version:

IE -> Tools -> Manage add-ons. In that window highlight Toolbar and Extensions in left column. Is Java enabled? If not, enable. BTW, I have two listed. SSV Helper and 2 SSV helper.

Control Panel -> Java -> Java tab -> View. Check to make sure it is enabled in User and System tabs.

Are you running the 64bit version of Windows 8? You will need to install both the 32bit and 64bit versions of Java.

Welcome to EightForums, toddphillipo.

Have you tried all the suggested above? I'm also seeing a pattern here in the OP is using IE and Chrome. Which is your default browser?

You need 64bit java for 64bit browsers, and 32 for the 32 ones.

Update 10 for jre7 has be released:
Java SE Downloads

It adds better support for Win8 so it's recommended to upgrade.

Hi guys,

I have exactly the same issue with java - i can see the platform icon, but games do not load, i.e. chess.com stays grey. Chrome is default. Tried IE and Firefox, same thing. It is enabled and installed (latest).

Just as an FYI, I am only running Java 32bit 6_25 and am playing the against the PC on chess.com.

What other java sites are you all going to?

I can play this without issue... Off-Road Rally - by Ben Librojo

You need to disable ActiveX Filtering .

Same problems and I have installed 32 and 64 bit versions of Java and Java is not recognised in Chrome and IE10.

[DEL]medab1, your links aren't working and I would like to try whatever you're suggesting here, although I did try not filer ActiveX in IE10 which didn't work.[/DEL]

I've tried suggestions above but am at a loss. I wonder if the others got working?
