Netflix App

Biggest one for me is Netflix metro has hardware decoding and access to 1080p streams. hopefully soon it will do DD/DD+ 5.1 sound passthru as well.

Website is stuck using 720p max and silverlight.
if you are using an ion settop for HTPC or AMD E350, it won't even do 720p because of silverlight (/w DRM) isnt gpu hardware accelerated. lots of dropped frames. Also silverlight will never support 5.1 sound.

Well, just like that without me doing anything at all Netflix now works on both my Windows 8 installs. So I'll just mark this solved without reasoning.

the app isn't working for me. I have the same problem. I launch the app. It tries to load. I get dumped back to the start screen.

    count yourself lucky!

Tried it again today and now I am getting a different error:

    W8156-800401E3

    System Configuration Error

"There is a problem with this system's configuration that prevents Windows from playing protected video. Please make sure you have the latest Windows Updates as well as Windows 8 certified video and audio drivers installed."

W8 and my audio/video drivers are all up to date. Although I am signed into Netflix via the app, perhaps it is having trouble authenticating?? No idea. Not a big deal though since it works as well as ever in the browser.

The first time my Netflix App actually started working I got the same error when trying to play a video. I also thought I had the latest video drivers but then went to Windows Update and forced a check for updates, low and behold a video driver update appeared. I installed it and my Netflix worked right after. Perhaps I got lucky.

I still cant get the Netflix app to run. I've done all the Windows and Sony updates possible on my Sony VAIO and I can't get it to eve start. It goes back to the same error listed above, something about the graphic driver? It sounds like some people are indicating to run it off from the web browser versus the Netflix App? Thanks.

for me to get the Netflix app to work (and my other streaming software), I had to go back to the ATI/AMD driver that was included with Windows 8 for my ATI HD4670. The latest graphics driver from the AMD/ATI website (Legacy 12.6) broke all streaming apps. I've learned lately that it's an HDCP problem. Unfortunately, my graphics card is now a legacy card and will receive no more updates.

check out this thread where I saw a new aspect of the same problem:

first i got the 97% stuck error, (catalyst legacy drivers) so i reverted to windows 8 original vga drivers

now i get this error w8159

tried reinstalling app, updating licenses of apps in the store, deleting a drm folder, nothing works.

no, no. don't revert to the VGA drivers (the Microsoft basic display driver). those are way too limited and only meant for getting Windows up and running. it's not functional for actual use.

what I would recommend is install the legacy 12.6 catalyst suite EXCEPT FOR THE DRIVER. then use the ATI Microsoft WDDM 1.1 drivers that comes with Windows 8. mine are dated 6/19/12. I'm not sure what your card model is so I don't know what driver version numbers you will have. but I know the legacy 12.6 drivers have tons of HDCP/DRM problems which will interfere with most if not all streaming apps.

here's my post where I first out out about the legacy driver problem:

aw man sorry, yeah i meant the windows 8 amd drivers, saw the tip on guru3d to fix the stuck at 97% issue, but then i started having that DRM error

might have to redo the whole thing to see if it fixes itself
