Hi there

I think finally Windows 8.1 is getting through to the public -- even on these Forums windows 8 users has reached approx. 60% of the number on 7 Forums.

Update 1 definitely is a huge improvement on the original Windows 8 which wasn't that great. Looks like Ms also has decent things planned for update 2 and Win 9.

Cheers

I always regard the true input in the "general" and "Installation" categories. The remainder of categories are , IMO, applicable to any OS. Considering this (IMO) the 67000, against 467000 Windows 7) presents a different figure. But, surely, this forum input represents problems etc., not general usage? In which case, it does seem that Windows 8 has, so far, less problems than it predecessors.
But, nevertheless (sorry, again IMO) forums are occupied by users who are more active in assessing faults and attempting to make OSs jump through hoops (blinkered)
In the real world where I mingle, the huge majority of Windows 8 home users are perfectly happy with it.

Use several different computers during a day, so specs are irrelevant.

Hi there

I've found that with 8.1 - especially update 1 and being able to boot to the desktop directly seems to satisfy the majority now --

The Metro stuff just isn't mature enough for people to take these apps "seriously" yet -- but that might improve - especially if Ms gets away from FIXED screen % sizes like 1/2, 1/4 etc. These apps can be a HUGE waste of screen real estate if you have a large Monitor as people increasingly do these days.

The whole menu thing seems to have worn off now - people either pin to desktop, pin to taskbar or use a custom toolbar or a combination of all of these.

The biggest problem I have with W8.1 is that there are still a load of corporate applications that don't work with it - but increasingly these people are providing a VDI so you can essentially logon to your work places virtual "servers" or desktops even from W8.1 with your own device.

It's going to take a while.... there's a boatload of folks moving from XP to Win7.

I agree Jim, the tile size needs to be fixed... err not FIXED... um, you know what I mean :)

Rumors on Win9 and 8.1 up2 show that the Start menu and Start are being "merged". A new pane to the right of the Start menu is reportedly going to show the modern apps.

Corporate applications issues will be fixed, it happens with every Windows. I'm a little surprised to hear that though, the base is still 6.x.x - I suspect it's drivers, not Windows. But.... all of my drivers were updated when I installed Win 8 -> 8.1 five days ago. I haven't had the chance to analyze in detail.

An issue with an external HD resurfaced (was also in Win7) - it goes to sleep and that causes big performance issues when it has to wake up (Library locations are on the drive - search crawl...). I'm working through the power and USB settings now. The Seagate Dashboard utility won't install (OS not supported). So... nothing yet.

I haven't had any issues on Win8 other than the sleeping ext HD (except the ones I caused by mucking around with my new OS :))
