Microsoft patches XP after support ends for XP

Yeh, essentially copy and paste the IE 8 patch which probably is the same on Vista Josh :)

Microsoft patches XP after support ends for XP

Aye, it was an isolated issue with internet explorer. I used this exploit on one of my machines for demonstration on one of my college assignments. Quite scary to think that just by going to a webpage they could have access to potentially the entire system. XP was awful for security...

    Ports Blocked [Possibly?]

Just a note, If you are trying to run a Minecraft server, make sure that output ports are all open so that dynamic source ports can be made for the clients. You may be experiencing an issue where communication is going to the server but the server cannot respond back because the reply traffic is...

Windows 8.1 resets my DNS settings to auto

@echo off netsh interface ipv4 add dnsserver "{InterfaceName}" address="{DNSAddress}" index=1 Replace the Interface name with the interface that you want to configure. To find out the relevant names use the following command in command prompt: netsh interface show interface Also...

Windows 8.1 resets my DNS settings to auto

Are the changes made on the local machine or at the router level? If you can I would change the DNS servers handed out by your router. If you configure a full static IP address on to your client device it will only use the DNS servers that you specify. Choice is yours, Josh :)

    Anyone Heard of FenOS?

 Nice!! Not sure about WinConn and 8.1 but I can definitely confirm that it works for 7. Josh :)

    Anyone Heard of FenOS?

It can be quirky at the best of times. The issue is that it does NOT emulate windows but just offers a basic Windows file structure and registry hive. Whenever an application relies on a core system component or uses a recent proprietary language such as VB.NET then it seems to fail :( For...

    Anyone Heard of FenOS?

You can already do most of this with any Linux distro no? Wine anyone? As for running Apple software I am not sure. Though come to think of it, isn't most things on mac available for other platforms anyway (Other than the apple proprietary stuff)? Just by looking at that awful UI alone... I'm...

    Internet access just hangs

Seems to me that it is an issue with regards to metrics and routing. Navigate to your cellular wireless internet connection and then go to the TCP/IPv4 properties. From here adjust the metric and set it to 1. This way Windows should prefer to use your tethered internet connection for internet...

Is Windows 8.1 that awful for private (local) email?

I found that when testing deployment of windows 8.1 I had to remove the network connection after installation and setup of the first user account. If it detects an Internet connection then it forces you to use a microsoft account. If you remove the network connection then it allows you to make a...

User Account - Create a PIN in Windows 8

Solved I can't make copies from activated .vhd files?

Activation normally fails because the new machine/VM has a different GUID than the previous machine. Unless you do a clone of the VM it should always fail activation. Depending on the license involved the phone activation may work. As a side note, mounted DVD drives are located at...

    Gateway Default not Available.

Can you ping 192.168.0.1? Do you receive a response? Normally an intermittent wireless network is due to a conflicting wireless channel or potentially a bad driver... Test with the wired solution as previously mentioned and post back results. If you can, are you able to post an ipconfig...

Trivia question: max value for -w in ping command?

192.0.2.2 would be a public IP address so someone may have it on the internet or it may not be used. I don't know... I have decided to use an autoconfiguration address that is only used when a device cannot get a DHCP offer (169.254.xxx.xxx) Either way, as long as it offers a timeout the...

Solved Windows 8.1 Network Boot Issue

If safe mode works then I would suspect a third party application causing issues. I would also suspect a firewall or anti-virus application since they can affect network services. Try to follow this tutorial to troubleshoot what the possible offending application is. Please note that may take...

Trivia question: max value for -w in ping command?

I'm not entirely sure what the maximum is but what I believe you are trying to do is to set a wait period in a batch file? For a wait out period I set the timeout period to 1000 (1 Second) and then use the count trigger to determine the amount of seconds to wait. For example: ping...

Windows 8 stops allowing new connections.

This is a really bizarre issue and I feel it has something to do with chrome.... TCP based ports reside at layer 4 of the OSI reference model. NICs are layer 2 devices therefore have no interference with port usage. It may have something to do with how chrome handles its processes. Each tab...

Solved Ports closed; router forwarded ports, firewalls disabled?

Hamachi was the most likely cause because of the IP address differences. I am glad you found a suitable solution however please do not hesitate to post back should the issue reoccur! Josh :)
