    Well, to follow up...I went through the process like this: Installed windows update advisor to my new SSD running windows 8 consumer preview Shut down and disconnected all other HDD's Booted to the SSD, and ran the advisor in W8CP...paid for and downloaded W8 pro for $40 Installed from the SSD...

    Solved Windows 8 upgrade to new hard drive

    I have the same question: Old XP machine, new SSD for Win8...is this an upgrade or need OEM? Any luck figuring it out? I have now installed W8 CP on the new SSD, and booted from that disc...downloaded the Upgrade assistant, and it says to download W8 Pro for $40. I think I may just go for it...
