You might get flamed, but it's a very good idea. I've never run Linux OR a dual boot system, but I don't believe it's rocket science, so I'll give it a spin. Anything I should be aware of before jumping in?

I doubt I'd get a replacement on a 6-7 year old drive, but I'm glad your problem was resolved easily. I'll try a couple of other hard drive tests to see I can get any more HDD-specific clues.
