how to recover my windows 8.1 installation

With images you are safe - either Windows images or Macrium images would be my choice. I would not bother to double boot. Just upgrade to Windows 10 and if you don't like it roll in your latest 8.1 image. Btw - there is a neat command with which you can make a Windows image: wbadmin start...

Looking for Onenote 2010 stand alone install program

I don't think you will find a free download. The best I have seen is a $50 download.

Windows 8.1 on SSD Drive plugged to USB3.0

I don't know whether that is faster. But it is one of the ways to get a Windows 8.1 to go if you DO NOT have Enterprise (which few people have). If you have Enterprise, use their facilities. That's easier.

Windows 8.1 on SSD Drive plugged to USB3.0

Yeah right - you have 2 options" 1. Make your 8.1 a Windows to go. Here is how: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/5349-windows-8-go-setup-usb-flash-drive-usb-disk.html 2. Run 8.1 as a virtual system from the external SSD (that's what I do). Here is how...

Solved Not receiving the notification to reserve Windows 10?

No need to panic. There will be plenty of opportunities for a free upgrade during the first year after RTM. I would wait a few months afte RTM anyhow for the others to shake out the bugs.

How Do I Maintain Steady Copy Speed in Win 8.1?

Not really - if in doubt, use 'Safely Remove'. Then nothing can happen.

Enclosed USB mSATA SSD doesn't get recognized on ultrabook

Although I usually recommend to use free Macrium Reflect for imaging tasks, you may have an easier option since you have a WinPE stick. Check whether that allows you to initiate a Windows 8.1 recovery when booted from that stick (see picture below). If yes, you can make an easy image via an...

Enclosed USB mSATA SSD doesn't get recognized on ultrabook

This is indeed a puzzling problem. The suggested power problem is unlikely. A USB3 port should provide plenty of power for a SSD which consumes very little power. I run SSDs in enclosures from USB2 ports that provide a lot less power than USB3. It is more likely that there is a driver problem...

Why would I want to switch to Windows 10?

I did not suggest that everybody should use high contrast themes. It was just an example how one function - Personalize - got mucked up.

Why would I want to switch to Windows 10?

How do you figure that?? W10 is a pure touch OS. Nothing has been done to improve the operational characteristics of classic desktops with keyboard and mouse. Make the test - define a high contrast theme in 8.1 and then in 10 and tell me which is easier.

Yes, if it is a retail license that is no more installed on another system it works. But not an OEM license.

    windows 8.1 problem

If your problem is that some system files were not restored correctly, then any Windows 8.1 .iso can correct that. But if it is only some programs missing, you can just reinstall these programs. What is so difficult about that.

    Virtual machine in Windows 8.1

I run 6 different virtual systems under VMware Player and they all work. Here is a tutorial I made that may give you some additional information. It describes Win 10 and Win 8.1 on a Win 7 host, but the principle is the same for any OS on any host. PS - just be aware that you need an unused...

    windows 8.1 problem

I would create an installation disc from the link that Ztruker has posted or from here and then do a repair/install with that. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/26095-repair-install-windows-8-a.html

Why would I want to switch to Windows 10?

We had discussed this scenario before. There is no conceivable way that MS can install Win10 on your system without your agreement. The least you will have to agree to is the EULA.

    new pc

    1. Does the disk show as 'encrypted' in disk management. 2. Is your new PC an Instant Go device. Check in command prompt with this command: powercfg /a -- If it says Standby (Connected), then it is Instant Go. 3. Instant Go decryption instructions you can find in my little tutorial.
