I have a very unique and hard to explain "fix"... When I play video using splayer the system does not crash, freeze or hang...ever. its really weird because I cant explain it but somehow compared to when I don't have splayer open it seems better. maybe you can try to duplicate it but it "works"...

ok lets see. it fixed most of the problems but it introduced a few... I no longer have cuda 5 support but its not really a great loss since my card only supports up to 4 anyway. the driver keeps restarting but at-least it doesn't cause the computer to freeze up. yet at least. using nvidia gtx 260m
