Can you upgrade from Win 8 / 8.1 to Win 10 free?

I used the tool here to upgrade three machines from Win 7 to 10 last week because the updates for the former will be ending soon: Download Windows 10 The process looked something like this: For now, all three PCs are running correctly, with settings in place, and no prompts for activation...

Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ISO - Download or Create

Thanks for sharing that. I just had a credential manager error problem (the RPC server is unavailable), and after twelve tasks to fix it didn't work, I had to do a repair install which fixed it and retained all files, apps, and settings. The catch is that I had to reinstall around 2 GB of...

Optimize Drives - Defrag HDD and TRIM SSD in Windows 8

I just discovered that the built-in defrag does not work very well, whether I let it defrag on schedule or manually. Sometimes, the system still slows down, and does better only when I use a third-party defrag program, and do a boot defrag. Interestingly enough, similar takes place even for HDs...

Looking for Program to Fit Files to Multiple DVDs

It can be another medium and not necessarily DVDs. Some programs have preset formats or allow for manual storage size entry. I'll have to check if some backup programs can store files in non-archived format. For now, I am using DiscFit, but only for content with no folders.

Looking for Program to Fit Files to Multiple DVDs

Thanks. I would like to be able to access files directly from a particular disc, which means they should not be archived or split. I will have no choice, though, for files that are larger than a DVD. For example, Folder 1 has subfolders 1A and 1B Folder 2 has subfolders 2A and 2B The program...

Looking for Program to Fit Files to Multiple DVDs

Hi. I'm looking for a program for Win 8 that can fit files and folders to multiple DVDs and minimize free space. It should be able to split folders but preferably not files. I'd like to avoid using an archiving program except for files that are larger than a DVD. I tried some programs found...

Special Themes (AeroLite and High Contrast variations)

Thanks for the themes! Is there one that uses the regular Windows 8 theme but changes the window background color of all applications (including the windows or file explorer) to light grey?

Want Grey color windows explorer and appliction background

Thanks! If anyone knows what software is used to customize themes, please let me know. Perhaps I can use my present theme (which is the default used for 8.1 with my own wallpaper) and modify the background color of window apps.

Optimize Drives vs Third Party Defrag

In my case, it's 8 percent fragmentation after only 10 days of use. It's a new system with 8.1 installed, no system tweaks, and just one HD used for both OS and data.

Optimize Drives vs Third Party Defrag

I didn't have SSD when I used Win 7, and both OS and data were located in the same HD. Later, though, I made a partition for most of the data (lots of files, both big and small), but I still experienced a slowdown with the default setting. For Win 8, I will use the same process (only one HD for...

Optimize Drives vs Third Party Defrag

I've been using Win 8 for only a few days, so I'll stick with the default setting for now. From what I experienced, the need for third-party software has a lot to do with the amount of data copied, moved, and deleted in the HD. If it's not much, then one can probably make do with the default...

How to change the background color of Windows 8 Explorer

I experienced the same issue, which is fine because I also want a grey background for other apps. It's just that I can't find the registry entries for the color background of the file explorer main and tree windows. I notice that in some sites which offer Win 8 skins this is possible.

Want Grey color windows explorer and appliction background

I tried a registry tweak, but it worked on other applications rather than on the file explorer, which is fine because I want a grey background for windows of all applications. I'm still looking for the registry entry for the file explorer main and tree window.
