    I am 99% certain that it's Update KB2962407 that is causing the problem. When I uninstalled just that update, presto, my sound is back and has stayed OK now for the last couple of days. Tried various things like using headphones, playing music etc. Microsoft's site reports issues with this too...

    Well, so much for that. It was all working fine, then I plugged in headphones, now I have no sound again. I am SOOOO frustrated. I will finish uninstalling all the last Windows Updates, I am still convinced that is the problem.

    Just found this site! So I am NOT the only person. I was absolutely SURE this has something to do with Windows Update; this happened to me twice now, both times right after I updated. The first time I did a System Restore, and it wasn't until I restored to before the Windows Critical Update...
