OK. I appreciate your help & advice. Things have been running smoothly now, no hint of problems. However, I'll leave this as «UNSOLVED» as I can't write down an actual solution to this. Maybe I'll find out something more in the future; if so I'll leave it here as-is for now.

This is what I saw, minus the spinny bit at the bottom. If it had been a driver problem, why did it happen repeatedly, and then stopped for no apparent reason. As for external media, I have the install DVD on a bootable flashdrive. This computer doesn't have a ODD on it. Thanks anyway.
