Oh ok, but when I first installed it I could pin programs like aida64, and Virtualdub to the start menu, but now I cannot, unless I go through the steps like above.
I have managed to find a work around, I won't click solved because if you download or purchase apps from the store it doesn't automatically add the shortcut on the start menu.
Just search for the app that you have purchased in the start menu and right click and click pin to start.
I have just...
I probably didnt explain myself very well. My PC is not adding the shortcuts to the start menu, so if I click the arrow there isn't a shortcut there and if I try and add one by right clicking on an exe and clicking pin to start I get that error.
I am not trying to add an exe to the start menu...

Oh OK so it is in 8 also. It seems an awkward setting, it would let me play around half of my video library and the other with that error.

Thanks for you help man. I am off to research this bloody setting. :)

Ok cheers buddy, I am just about to leave for work but I will check when I get in. Thanks for your help and I will update you later.
I didn't dual boot but I have a system image of Windows 8 that I checked it on.
Yes I did a full CHKDSK on reboot.
It is .avi, .mkv, .mp4 files not just avi. I will have another go at it when I get home from work tonight, if it dosent work I will have to replace the disk I guess.
But on Windows 8 it is fine, just not 8.1.
Sorry I should have said that I have run CHKDSK. The file has not been moved, if I do move it however to another disk it becomes usable again.
I am thinking it is a disk problem although I have checked all permissions it still asks me for admin rights when using drag and drop to this disk.
I installed Windows 8.1 a couple of days ago and I am having a crazy issue with my movie files. Any file that dosnt show a thumbnail wont play, if however I drag it to the desktop it will display a thumbnail and play. If I try playing one in VLC it has an error 'of bad file descriptor'.
I have...
