Solved No drive letters for external drives

Thanks everyone for your help! I was able to restore one drive back to full functionality. The other two drives I'm still working on but you folks gave me some good information to start in on them. From what I've read on the windows 10 forums from TechNet, it looks like the old Tech Preview...

Solved No drive letters for external drives

Well, two of the drives are now dead. One is even preventing the computer from booting up as long as it is plugged in to it. I have the one backup drive left so I will try changing the attribute from hidden (if that is the case) using diskpart. I can trace this all happening to a Windows 10...

Solved No drive letters for external drives

HI there folks! I have googled the crap out of this problem, but I can't seem to find an answer. All 3 of my external drives suddenly have no drive letters assigned to them. There is no hardware problem that I can find. Each are plugged into their own dedicated USB port on the computer. I...

No Media Center after 8.1 update

Hi PhilNolan3d, You could try it again and when it stops and says the key is no good, reboot your computer. I think it's a bug with Media Centre. It should install upon reboot. I had the same problem and that fixed it for me! Good luck. Snarks:cool:

Windows Media Center key not working!

Hi there folks. I recently purchased a new computer with Windows 8 pre-installed. I purchased a Media Center key and all was well. I had to reinstall the operating system using a system restore disk and upgraded to Windows 8.1. When I try the Media Centre key again it says it won't work. It...

    Help please, novice error committed

Hi Big P. Welcome to the forums! I don't see any reason why deleting the windows.old folder will cause you to get a "disk read error". I know you should run a scan on your disk to see if there are any corrupted files on your computer. Perhaps one of the Windows 8 gurus here can tell you...

Microsoft Insists That It’s Now a Consumer-Shaped Company

Windows 8.1 RTM Released to MSDN & Technet

I think I may just bite the bullet and do a clean install. I really want to have this on my computer, but I didn't want to have to install everything all over again. Maybe a clean install is what I need in order to get rid of all the accumulated crap on my computer too. Thanx for your help...

Windows 8.1 RTM Released to MSDN & Technet

So if I upgrade to Windows 8 first and then Windows 8.1, I should be able to keep my programs? Am I reading you correctly? I'd be more than happy to do that if it meant that I get to keep my programs. Can someone enlighten me? Snarks

Windows 8.1 RTM Released to MSDN & Technet

Microsoft screwed up big time with this one! Make sure you have a backup of your Windows 7 installation before upgrading to this piece of crap. Good thing I backed up. I had years of software installed on my Windows 7 installation that was summarily wiped out by this "upgrade". I figured...

Four months in, Windows 8 needs help

You are right. I should have considered the price of the RT. It is still $599 on sale for a 64GB model. Also you are right in that laptop prices have really come down. But, I just wanted to point out how expensive they are compared to Android tablets. Plus developers have really jumped on...

Four months in, Windows 8 needs help

I've been lurking in the forums for a while, watching the debate rage on. I think it's time I weighed in. I have been using Windows 8 for a couple of months now and have installed Start8 as I just find it makes things easier for me. As far as "liking" Windows 8 over Windows 7, I'm...

Solved How do I disable hibernation?

Thanks Thanks Brink! Once again you have proven you are an asset to this forum. I tried looking through the tutorials, but I couldn't find the one you linked to. Hopefully it will work. Time will tell. I have marked this as solved for now. Have a real one! Snarks:cool:

Solved How do I disable hibernation?

Hi folks! I'm usually not the one to post a problem here as I can usually figure out the solution, but this one has me stumped. When I lock my screen and leave my computer to do tasks while I'm away, the computer goes into hibernation after an hour or so. I tried fiddling with the power...

Solved Why I'm switching back to Windows 7

Hi all! I've been using Windows 8 RTM for a few days now and I'm finding quite a few deal breakers. The first thing is that I cannot find a backup function. I've googled the hell out of it using different key words and there are articles that claim that I can use the old backup tool but no...

What happened to the Backup Function??

I downloaded and installed the RTM yesterday from TechNet. Installed without a hitch. I wasn't a fan at first, but I'm getting used to it. The only thing is that I can't find Backup. Has Microsoft removed it, or am I just not looking in the right place? This will be a deal breaker for me as...

How Microsoft can salvage Windows 8 before it's too late

The $40 price is only available til January. Then Microsoft will charge whatever they want to charge for it. No pricing scheme is out yet to my knowledge. Snarks:cool:

Windows 8 Will Be a Winner: 10 Reasons Why

I thought the list was so impressive I decided to repeat it. I wasn't sure about the Metro UI, but the app store on my android tablet is so addictive, I'm sure that the Windows 8 store will be the same. Looking forward to the consumer preview at the end of the month. Thanx John.
