Thanks for the replies. I decided to go for a refresh. Unfortunately this has resulted in windows not booting at all. I am currently using a Linux live disk to rescue files so I can do a clean install and not lose anything. Thanks again.

Hello thanks for your reply. I am using BitDefender. I am also using this on two laptops running Win 8 with no detrimental effect.
