Some but not all system sounds gone awol!

Ah yes, thank you, I am aware of that. However, that would all be a time-consuming performance - and I'm mindful that it won't be at all long now before my Win8.1 gets upgraded to 10, so it's probably not worth all that hassle in the meantime. Actually, if more or less nobody else has been...

Some but not all system sounds gone awol!

I've been doing fine with Win8.1 x64, until a few days ago. At that time there were two changes, one of which I assume to be the culprit. (1) a succession of Windows updates, and (2) my installation of HitmanPro Alert (HMPA) in place of Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit. Then it crept up on me that I...

Solved Strange icon-like thing appears on desktop

Brilliant - thank you, Limpain! I just closed Comodo, and, sure enough, the weird thing disappeared. I've now unchecked 'Show Comodo Message Centre'. Just to be sure, I'll wait for a new session on my computer to pass without the funny object reappearing before I mark this thread as 'solved'.

Solved Strange icon-like thing appears on desktop

Just over the last couple of weeks I've had a very strange rather icon-like vertical rectangle appear on my desktop in every session, generally within a very few minutes of completion of loading of startup programs, and I haven't been able to relate its appearance to any specific program. It...

History listing of Net traffic including remote host?

I know lots of programs list current connections of Net-active programs, including a column for remote host, but I have been trying in vain to find a program that gives an actual history of down/uploads, showing the remote host for each event. I used to get that in the logs of Outpost Pro...

    Location of volume mixer settings...?

Thank you again, MilesAhead! Actually before I came to your new post I'd experimented further, and found that I got a full restore of the registry key implemented if I exited all running programs for which I'd set a sound volume, then rebooted (okay, I expect just logging out would have...

    Location of volume mixer settings...?

Oh, thank you again! I'm already an enthusiastic AHK user, but of course its capabilities are quite labyrinthine, so I wasn't aware that I could use it for that. Now I know, I'll set up the respective hotkey commands. However, tests that I've just carried out throw a question mark over what...

    Location of volume mixer settings...?

Ah yes, well said, MilesAhead! However, today has proved to be a 'Eureka!' one, in that I've now found it! - No, not by being a super registry sleuth, but by doing a more focused Google search, just for ""Windows 8" backup mixer settings". I thus found a forum thread on this very issue, which...

    Location of volume mixer settings...?

Sorry to say, I've found SoundVolumeView to be totally useless. The reason is, the appearance of programs in the list is generally ephemeral, so a profile saved at any point does NOT include settings for what is not listed at that moment, and thus cannot restore their settings. I suppose, if the...

    Location of volume mixer settings...?

Ah, thank you indeed for that! I've just downloaded and started using SoundVolumeView, and it does appear to do what I wanted to do. I expect I'll keep to using that, as it simplifies the backing up and restoring of sound volume profiles, and allows easy changing of profile. It would still be...

    Location of volume mixer settings...?

I have an ongoing annoyance, which I've had through all Windows versions from XP or maybe Vista onwards, in that although I can individually set the volume level of each program that makes any sounds, all those volume settings are wiped out and reverted to the much unwanted default level every...

Huge icon at pointer during drag and drop (Explorer)

Thank you, 4wd. Actually, please see my last post, which I edited without realizing that there had been another post, hidden on a new page in this thread! :-) I'm certainly not abandoning FC XE, even though there are occasions when I have to use Explorer (rare, now that I can at last drag and...

Huge icon at pointer during drag and drop (Explorer)

Thank you for the suggestion, Davehc, though at the moment I see no reason to be using an additional third-party file manager (i.e. as well as FreeCommander), unless it would be a complete replacement for Windows Explorer. In my experience so far, Windows Explorer is sometimes needed in addition...

Huge icon at pointer during drag and drop (Explorer)

Eureka! - Well, actually half a "Eureka!" No, I haven't progressed with regard to what happens in Windows Explorer, BUT I have solved it in FreeCommander. Belatedly I perused the FreeCommander Forum, in the Beta Discussion, and found a thread relating to this very issue (i.e. with regard to...

Huge icon at pointer during drag and drop (Explorer)

Thank you for further response. Yes, actually I'd noticed and then pretty well forgotten those actually helpful textual indications of where one's drag is currently pointing to, and what file operation is about to be performed. As you intimate, actually the situation isn't as bad as I was...

Huge icon at pointer during drag and drop (Explorer)

Thanks indeed for the time taken in checking out this issue. I've just done the dism.exe scan, and it reports no problems. I also tried that 'translucent selection rectangle' option, and it makes no difference. As far as I know I'm not in aero mode, and I definitely have taskbar transparency...

Huge icon at pointer during drag and drop (Explorer)

I'm using EditPad - not that it makes any difference. True, a transparent icon would be better, BUT I do want to be shot of the distracting huge icon altogether - completely no use. All that's needed is a tiny rectangle, as I do get in some applications, just to show that something is being...

Huge icon at pointer during drag and drop (Explorer)

It would simplify things so much if people properly read my posts before responding. I made it quite clear that the problem was in Explorer and FreeCommander - except that I now wish I hadn't mentioned the latter program, because people are getting distracted and diverted by that from the actual...

Huge icon at pointer during drag and drop (Explorer)

Here is a screen clip of the issue in Explorer - the first time I've ever attempted to attach a file to a forum post, but it appears to work! You can surely see how obstructive the huge icon is - completely hiding wherever I might want to drop the file.

Huge icon at pointer during drag and drop (Explorer)

Thanks indeed for that try, but it hasn't worked. I deleted the icon cache file and restarted, and I still get that dratted big icon (i.e. large thumbnail size) at the tip of the pointer for all Explorer and FreeCommander drag-and-drops.
